In this program you’ll study music theory, music history, applied music, and have a variety of ensemble experiences. You’ll develop a clear understanding of how the tradition of music informs your performance as a musician. Apply your knowledge of musical language to become an effective artist/performer/educator/leader. Upon completion of this 9 semester program, your applied and ensemble experiences will provide you with a breath of repertoire and effective programming examples on which to build a career. 

Uniqueness

Combining the understanding of instrumental and vocal technique, conducting, methods of education and practicum experiences, this degree fosters the development of knowledge and skills needed to work teaching music within a school, church, community and other environments. Develop your talents into skills in: artistic expression, use of technology, collaboration, research and creative presentation.

Field Experiences & Clinical Experiences

Students gain experience through field work – teaching practice in actual classrooms. Many students log up to 100 practice hours before their first formal teaching assignment. We place students throughout local school districts, such as:

  • Olathe, Kansas
  • Blue Valley, Kansas
  • Shawnee Mission, Kansas
  • Gardner, Kansas
  • Spring Hill, Kansas
  • Bonner Springs, Kansas
  • DeSoto, Kansas

You’ll complete four pre-student teaching field experiences in a number of schools. These four programs will be in the following areas:

  • Exceptional Learner & Practicum
  • Research & Differentiated Learning Practicum
  • Curriculum Development & Assessment & Practicum
  • Methods of Teaching Secondary Biology
  • Music Student Teaching & Seminar (12 weeks) or International Student Teaching (14 weeks)

As school districts continue to grow, teachers are always in demand, making education a stable and rewarding profession. Your degree in music education will prepare you for teaching jobs in school districts throughout Kansas. Music education isn’t confined to schools, though. Some other career options include:
