Nursing is an art; and if it is to be made an art, it requires as exclusive a devotion, as hard a preparation,
as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or cold marble, compared with having to do with the living body - the temple of God's spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts; I had almost said the finest of the Fine Arts
~ Florence Nightingale

This quote from Florence Nightingale artfully expresses what the nursing faculty in the School of Nursing and Health Science believes about nursing as a professional practice. We see nursing as a vocation of ministry to people; one that requires scientifically-based knowledge and skill to be provided in caring and artistic ways. Most people who enter the field of nursing are probably motivated by the desire to care for people, and it is true that as a nurse you will have a tremendous impact on the lives of those you serve. The School of Nursing and Health Science at MidAmerica Nazarene University desires to prepare you to meet the healthcare challenges of a changing world by providing you with opportunities to learn the science of nursing and to develop your own unique style, or art, of nursing.

Department of Traditional BSN Studies

The traditional BSN program, graduating its first class in 1981, is the original BSN track and the program used by students wishing to achieve their degree in the traditional four-year university experience. Many of these students are campus residents and represent the North Central Region of the International Church of the Nazarene (e.g. Dakota/Minnesota, Iowa, Joplin, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri, and Nebraska). During the first two years students take lower-division (Level I) nursing courses, along with prerequisite and general education requirements. The final two years of education place heavy emphasis on upper-division (Levels II & III) nursing curriculum, including 2-3 days/week of clinical experiences in a variety of healthcare settings.

Department of Accelerated BSN Studies

The Accelerated BSN (ABSN) Program, initiated in 1991, and newly revised in 2011, is designed for the adult student with previous college experience, as well as the LPN and paramedic. This intense, year-long program begins in January, and students graduate with the BSN degree the following December.

Department of RN-BSN Studies

The Accelerated RN-BSN Programs are designed to integrate and expand nursing knowledge and experience of the Registered Nurse (RN) student. The curriculum is designed to provide educational experiences that enhance knowledge, competencies, and professional behaviors of the practicing RN. Courses are offered in 5-week modules with classes meeting one day/week. Students may join the program at any time during the calendar year. Courses are provided at the Olathe campus (Thursday) and at the Liberty, MO site (Tuesday). Some students elect to take coursework at both campus sites, allowing achievement of their BSN degree more quickly. Additionally, a completely online RN-BSN program is available.

Department of Graduate Studies in Nursing

The Accelerated MSN Program, launched in January of 2010, offers advanced nursing education in two specialty tracks:  (1) Nursing Education and (2) Healthcare Administration. The onsite program is designed for the working, BSN-prepared, professional nurse and offers classes one day/week in the format of 7-week modules. Students may begin coursework at the beginning of any module throughout the calendar year. An online program will begin in January 2012.
