Student Nurses' OrganizationKansas Association of Nursing Students (KANS)Each nursing student at MNU has the opportunity to belong to the Kansas Association of Nursing Students (KANS) as his or her first professional nursing organization. Membership in the KANS may be extended to the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) as well. Advantages of belonging to the NSNA include eligibility for an increased number of scholarships, health insurance, national publications, and discounts in a variety of businesses and organizations. Members of the local MNU KANS organization have participated in service projects such as taking blood pressures and administering flu shots in the community, collecting items/food for needy students, obtaining clothing and needed items for a local children's hospital, and sponsoring a children's health fair. Fundraising events have included clothing and medical equipment sales. Special speakers at the organization's monthly meetings reflect the special interests of students. These have included a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, armed forces recruiters as well as an alumnae serving in the United States Navy, and a speaker reporting about graduate educational opportunities available to students. Attendance at the state and national meetings is also possible for organization members. Social support is also an important function of MNU's KANS group. Monthly meetings and planning for social gatherings are always a priority. These gatherings provide a way for nursing students to meet and support each other, socialize with nursing faculty, and carry out the MNU ideals of "pioneering spirit, passion to serve, and purposeful lives." Please come and be a vital part of our MNU KANS organization! Contact faculty member Dawn Ferguson with your interest:
