Mock Trial Team
In October 2007, MNU's first competitive Mock Trial Team competed in the University of Kansas Jayhawk Invitational. Our team consisted of Crystalyn Oswald, Brian King, Jolaine Fowler, Courtnee Hininger, Jennifer Schoenberger, and Alexis Woodard. Students in mock trial act as attorneys and witnesses and prepare a case for presentation from start to finish.Students then compete head-to-head against other college teams and are evaluated by local attorneys and judges. Other teams competing in the Jayhawk Invitational were from the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas, the Air Force Academy, and Washburn University, among others.
Special congratulations go to Courtnee Hininger for tying for the First Place Best Witness Award. Recipients for this award were selected among all students competing as witnesses.
Mock Trial Team
Mock trial consists of teams of six to eight students who prepare a case for trial. Students on a mock trial team have the opportunity to serve as either witnesses or attorneys and will play these roles in several intercollegiate tournaments. Student attorneys will deliver the opening statements, closing statements, and direct and cross examinations. MidAmerica Nazarene University is a member of the American Mock Trial Association.
Mock trial benefits the students of MidAmerica Nazarene University in several ways. It develops the ability to speak and perform in front of audiences, develops analytical and critical thinking, and familiarizes students with the American legal system.
This semester students are preparing the sentencing phase of State of Midlands v. Bobbi Campbell. Bobbi Campbell has plead guilty to stabbing a child protective services worker with an HIV infected needle. Bobbi has several psychological issues and a history of being physically abused.
