Health Care Policies

  1. Each student's medical file will retain a completed medical history form, a completed physical form, as well as current records of communicable disease vaccinations.
    1. The athletic training students will also be asked to complete a health history form including such things as family history, personal medical history, present medications and dosages, and allergies. Included in this portion is a student's certification of fitness and release from responsibility waiver. The athletic training student signs this waiver stating that he/she believes him/herself to be healthy and able to carry out the demands of athletic training. It also states that the student will communicate any changes in their health status and releases MNU from any responsibility for damages or injuries that may occur during their athletic training education. This must be signed in the presence of a notary public.
    2. Athletic training students are required to have a comprehensive physical examination completed by a medical doctor. This report states that the health professional certifies that the student is fit physically, mentally, and emotionally to work in the athletic training setting. If there are any limitations, they should be identified and the designated prescribed remedy should be stated.
    3. Athletic training students are also required to report all surgeries and hospitalizations. It is the policy that if a student is under these such circumstances, they will be placed on probation because of their inability to comply to the technical standards and their possible infringement upon the rights of all those involved in the Athletic Training Program.
    4. Athletic training students are required to provide us with the following immunization record:
      1. Tuberculin skin test: If the T.B. skin test is positive, a chest x-ray must be done. A yearly T.B. test is required and written results given to the Program Director. The athletic training student may check with the Student Health Services for a T.B. skin test for a reduced rate or may be referred to off-campus sites.
      2. Hepatitis B Vaccine (HBV): All athletic training students are required to obtain the HBV . a sum of three injections over a six month period. A waiver must be signed if a student chooses not to procure the vaccines. The waiver will be kept on file until he/she provides documentation that the vaccines have been completed or when the athletic training student leaves the Athletic Training Education Program.
      3. Other proper immunizations as per the CDC for health care workers: Mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, diptheria and oral polio vaccine. Any immunizations required by the affiliate sites will also be the athletic training student's responsibility.
Athletic training students will sign a release of information stating that the student gives MNU permission to release to appropriate clinical affiliations information about the status of verifications as required for any clinical experience rotations. It will also state that MNU may disclose to the involved affiliation information that directly impacts his/her ability to practice safely in a clinical setting.
  2. Any athletic training student must report all infectious illnesses to the Program Director and Head Athletic Trainer. If at any time the student athletic trainer becomes physically unable to perform the duties required of him/her, their sport coverage responsibilities may be altered. The student will not be allowed to perform clinical duties until he/she is cleared by a physician as being non-infectious. This must be documented in the form of a prescription and given to the Head Athletic Trainer or Program Director for safe keeping in the student's file. In many cases, students who are active in the program are challenged to be able to meet the technical standards in full when under these circumstances. In order to guarantee that a student athletic trainer who is carrying an infective disease is in no way infringing upon the rights of all those involved in the athletic training education program, this policy is stringent.
