10 Easy Steps to a Semester or Summer Abroad

Call Ext. 3261 to make an appointment. Visit the Center for Global Studies and Service Learning. Look at resources, speak with Lorie Beckum, request brochures and information, and view a video. We welcome interested prospective students, undergraduates and graduate students.

Narrow your options and plan with your faculty advisor. Define your goals for studying abroad and identify suitable programs. Make an appointment to discuss the programs you are interested in. Plan with your faculty advisor.

Find out about costs. Meet with a Financial Aid counselor regarding program costs and using your financial aid.

Inform yourself. Learn about the country where you wish to study abroad. Talk with exchange students and study abroad returnees about their experiences.

Apply! Apply to the Center for Gobal Studies and Service Learning one year before you intend to study abroad. Talk and plan with your faculty advisor, as well. Begin applying for your program of choice the semester before you plan to go. The deadline for Fall, Academic Year, and Summer programs is usually March 15, and the deadline for Spring programs is October 15.

See your Academic Advisor. Discuss how your study abroad courses will fit in with your degree requirements and have your Advisor sign your Application for Off-Campus Study Program. Obtain other approvals and necessary signatures.

Submit your application on or before the deadline to the Office of the Registrar.

You've been accepted! Notify the Center for Global Studies and Service Learning, apply for your and passport --please make a link here to get a passport: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html make travel plans.

Orient yourself. Attend the mandatory pre-departure orientation for program information and question-and-answer sessions with past participants. Read carefully all the information in your orientation packet and feel free to ask questions.
