About the Peer Instructors
Peer Instructors are MNU students who:

  • enjoy helping other students
  • are approved by instructors as knowledgeable in the course material
  • are skilled in relating effectively to students
  • are trained in tutorial skills

How Peer Instructors can help you
Peer instructors can assist you in understanding and mastering the material of a particular course. They can also help you improve your study skills in areas such as managing time, taking lecture notes, reading texts efficiently, and preparing for as well as taking tests. Peer Instructors can help with the writing process, read to students, have students read to them, lead small study groups, provide regular workbook checks and demonstrate effective learning skills.
Study skills tutoring can be helpful if you:

  • delay studying until the last minute and end up cramming for tests
  • never seem to have enough time to study
  • uncertain how to get the most out of a textbook
  • find it hard to take concise, useful lecture notes
  • have trouble taking tests
  • have difficulty developing a successful method of studying

How to prepare for a tutoring session
Tutoring is a team effort. You and your peer instructor work together to help you do well in your courses. Be sure to bring your textbook, class notes, current class assignment, and a list of questions you may have. Make sure that before you see a peer instructor that you have completed or attempted your assignment and have made every effort to overcome your learning difficulties on your own. If you cannot seem to do so, then we will be glad to help you.

If you want to become a Peer Instructor
As a successful MNU student, you may want to help your peers by becoming a peer instructor. As a paid hourly position, tutoring allows you to help others, offers a flexible work schedule, provides convenient employment on campus, and reinforces your own learning. Qualifications include recommendation by your instructor(s), and student status. If selected, you will be provided with training in how to tutor.

If you are interested in applying for a tutoring position, complete a Peer Instructor Application (PDF 7.08 KB Help ) at the Kresge Center prior to the start of the semester in which you would like to tutor.
