Tutoring Guidelines

  1. Attendance at all meetings, training sessions, and evaluative sessions is mandatory.
  2. Be prepared for each tutoring session. Have an in-depth knowledge of the syllabus, course assignments and requirements for classes in which you tutor. This includes periodic contact with professors to learn of any course changes.
  3. Please notify Kresge Staff of schedule changes at least 1 week in advance, 2 weeks if contract termination.
  4. Tutor students in a one-to-one or small group basis as necessary.
  5. Be prompt for each tutoring session. Keep appointments.
  6. All tutoring must be done in the Kresge Center, except in special situations. Those special situations need to be cleared through one of the specialists.
  7. Call the Kresge Center, extension 3584, if you are unable to meet with a student. Then call the student to notify him/her of your absence. Give reasonable notice so we can fill your tutoring time.
  8. Consult a staff member if problems arise that need special attention or if a student needs to be referred to another campus resource.
  9. Maintain the confidentiality of the student concerning ability, grades, etc.
  10. It is requested that no one use the telephones in the Kresge Center during daytime hours as other offices on campus need to contact us. There is a phone in the lounge area across from the bathrooms that you may use. During evenings, you may make 5 minutes calls related to your tutoring or in the case of an emergency.
  11. Maintain a professional and quiet atmosphere conducive to a study environment. The evening tutor will be responsible to maintain this atmosphere; students unable to follow directions will be asked to use the Kresge Center during the day.
  12. During daytime hours, you are free to drink coffee and hot chocolate from the machines. Because of a fire hazard, the machines will not be used in the evenings.
  13. Remember your purpose in the Kresge Center - to assist and help students in their academic studies. Be courteous and helpful. Watch students coming into the Center and be assertive. Ask them what you can do for them. If you cannot help them refer to someone who can. Take the initiative.
  14. If you are not tutoring, you may be asked to assist in other duties in the Kresge Center.
  15. You are responsible for the materials students use in the Center. Professors trust us with security of their exams and materials. You will be held responsible for securing those items. If students wish to check materials out, refer them to Linda. If students wish to check materials out in the evening, please record checkout information.
  16. Please do not sit at the secretary's desk during the evening shifts.
  17. When you are on duty, please remain in the Kresge Center. The library isn't an alias for the Kresge Center!
  18. Please make sure each student signs an attendance slip. This is critical information to keep the Center open for students.
  19. Sign and turn in time sheets according to the policy Linda has stated. The green time sheets are at the front of the Tutor's drawer. Fill out the top of the green sheet accurately and be certain to sign your name at the bottom with the date. Failure to follow guidelines=missed paychecks!!
  20. Night shift checklist
    1. Clean up: clean floors, clear tables, and push chairs in around tables
    2. All lights and electrical equipment off
    3. Shut all doors
