Program Options

The Division of Nursing at MidAmerica offers two programs for persons seeking the BSN degree in preparation for taking the NCLEX-RNŽ, the RN licensing exam. Students in both the basic and accelerated programs take the same courses but the sequencing of courses differs between the two program.

  1. The basic program consists of the standard, two-year, upper-division curriculum and is the curriculum appropriate for most students. Courses are taken during the fall and spring semesters each year.
  2. The accelerated basic program involves taking parts of the junior-level courses in the fall and spring semesters along with lower-division nursing and prerequisite courses. The remainder of the junior-level courses are taken in a very heavily concentrated summer session involving 19 credit hours of course/clinical work. This allows the student to take senior-level courses the following fall and spring, thus eliminating one calendar year of study. The accelerated program is not appropriate for all students due to the pace required in each course and the added stress it places on financial and personal resources. Therefore, applicants for the accelerated program will be carefully selected based on several factors including previous college/university background, GPA, previous health care experience, performance in prerequisite nursing courses, individual strengths, and level of commitment. Generally speaking, fewer applicants are accepted for this program than for the fall program.

Twelve hours of lower-division nursing courses are taken by students seeking admission to both the basic and accelerated programs. Course descriptions for these, and all nursing courses, may be found in the MNU Catalog.
