Welcome to MNU’s third annual Homecoming BBQ Competition.
Enjoy great food and competition at the Rib Cook-Off and BBQ Competition under the Big Tent in the Pioneer Stadium parking lot. Great prizes are available for the winning team, and everyone gets a chance to share the amazing food!

Welcome to MNU’s Fourth annual Homecoming BBQ Competition. We are excited about this event, and with your help this is sure to be a successful contest. Below are the details and rules for the BBQ contest. Please complete this form and email, fax or mail to the Office of Alumni Relations at MNU. The contest will be open to the first 15 teams who register. Teams should include MNU alumni and friends, which includes: current students, alumni, faculty, friends of the university, family members and church groups. There will be three categories for judging the competition. They are: chicken, ribs and brisket. All categories will be judged by KCBS certified judges and will be judged on KCBS judging criteria (attached).
There will be a separate “Pioneer Spirit” award which will recognize the team whose contest space best displays “Pioneer Spirit,” new or old. Judging will be incognito and will be separate from the grand prize.
Entry into the contest is $25 per team.
CATEGORIES DETAILS AND RULES:
a. Chicken will be judged in a blind judging format (rules attached)
b. Each team must provide enough chicken for SIX (6) judges.

b. Each team must provide enough ribs for SIX (6) judges.
a. Brisket will be judged in a blind judging format (rules attached)
c. Each team must provide enough brisket for SIX (6) judges.
Teams will be allowed to set up on Friday, October 11, at 12:00 p.m. Team spaces will be 20x20 and will each have electricity.
Judging times on Saturday, October 12, will be as follows:
11:30 a.m. – Chicken
12:00 p.m. – Ribs
12:30 p.m. – Brisket
Judges will score each entry according to KCBS Rules for scoring. (attached)
Prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place teams in each of the three categories.
There will also be an award for the overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion.
Grand Champion: 1st Place Chicken 1st Place Ribs 1st Place Brisket
Reserve Grand Champion: 2nd Place Chicken 2nd Place Ribs 2nd Place Brisket
Pioneer Spirit: 1st Place Spirit 2nd Place Spirit
New for 2013 is a Friday night event called “Buck Night”. This event will coincide with the Young alumni Late Night event being held under the Big Tent. Each team is asked to participate by providing samples in exchange for tickets that will be purchased by the public. Samples are the cook’s choice and should be of approximately $1 value such as chicken thigh, single rib, sausage serving, etc., and are at the discretion of each individual cook.
Sample times will be communicated previous to the evening event and will most likely happen late in the evening (after 9 p.m.). Each team will gather tickets and turn them in for reimbursement prior to midnight on Friday night (50 cents per ticket reimbursement).
This event is intended to solicit more participation from the crowd on Friday night and create a more intimate atmosphere for all involved. There will be no pizza this year so the BBQ samples will be the main food source for participants in Friday’s events.
On Saturday morning from 10 a.m. - Noon, there will be a public sampling of pulled pork from each team. This is optional, but we prefer every team to participate. MNU Student Volunteers will be assisting each team in handing out samples of their pulled pork in exchange for tickets. Proceeds from the sale of these tickets will benefit the general scholarship fund. Each Team will be provided 2 pork shoulders for this event.
