Welcome to MNU’s fifth annual Homecoming BBQ Competition.
Enjoy great food and competition at the Pioneer BBQ Cook-Off under the Big Tent in the Pioneer Stadium parking lot. Great prizes are available for the winning team, and everyone gets a chance to share the amazing food!
Please review the competition details and rules below and click on the above link to register your team. There will be three competition categories: Chicken, Pork Ribs and Beef Brisket. All categories will be judged using rules adapted from official KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) Rules & Regulations.
Entry into the contest is $25 per team.

All meats will be judged in a blind judging format in accordance with guidelines adapted from the official KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) rules for judging. Click here to read the official rules. Each team must provide sufficient meat quantities for six (6) judges.
SET-UP AND JUDGING TIMES
Teams will be allowed to begin setting up on Friday, October 16, at 12:00 p.m. Team spaces will be 20x20 and will each include electricity, one (1) 8-foot table and two (2) complimentary tickets to Saturday’s pancake breakfast.
A mandatory “Cooks' Event” (potluck and meeting) will take place Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
Judging times on Saturday, October 17, will be as follows:
10:30 a.m. – Chicken
11:00 a.m. – Pork Ribs
11:30 a.m. – Beef Brisket
SCORING & PRIZES
Judges will score each entry according to guidelines adapted from KCBS rules (click here to download official rules).
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
Grand Champion / Reserve Grand Champion
(based on cumulative Chicken, Rib, and Brisket scoring)
1st Place / 2nd Place - Chicken
1st Place / 2nd Place – Pork Ribs
1st Place / 2nd Place – Beef Brisket
1st Place / 2nd Place – People’s Choice Pulled Pork **
** does not count toward Grand Champion standings (see below)
Friday night is “Buck Night,” which coincides with the Young Alumni Late Night event being held under the Big Tent.
Sampling will be from 8:30-11:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16. Participation in Buck Night is requested of all teams, but not mandatory. Each team is encouraged to participate by providing samples in exchange for tickets that will be purchased by the public. Samples are the competitor’s choice (example: chicken thigh, single rib, portion of sausage, etc.). Teams may choose to offer more substantial options (example: pulled pork sandwich, chicken quarter, meal combos, etc.), but all offerings must be priced in dollar increments and at least one $1.00 sample option must be offered. The competition organizers will offer beverages on Buck Night for $1.00 as well.
At the close of Buck Night, teams can redeem their collected tickets for their cash equivalent. Teams are encouraged to promote attendance from among their networks of family, friends and colleagues.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE PULLED PORK
On Saturday morning from 10:45 a.m. to Noon, there will be a public sampling of pulled pork from each team. Each team will be provided two (2) complimentary pork shoulders to prepare for the public tasting. Your pulled pork will be collected by competition volunteers no later than 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and will be kept warm until the start of public tasting. Disposable pans will be provided. Rating cards will be collected from the public and used to determine the "People's Choice" winners. Though prizes will be awarded, this category will not count toward Grand Champion standings.
