Mary Alyce Galloway, Original Faculty [October 25, 2007]
We arrived in Olathe August 1, 1968, having moved from Nampa, ID. My husband had been asked to join the faculty at NTS that fall; I inquired of Dr. Metz as to a teaching position on the new faculty and was accepted.
I remember the first “faculty meeting” held at the Black Angus north of Olathe on I-25 at lunch time. WE found on our chairs a copy of the Bible and a purse-size copy of the Nazarene hymnal, gifts from the Publishing House.
I remember wearing sandals and climbing up the dirt bank in front of Lunn Hall to my first class among whom were Jim Edlin, Saralyn Schmidt, and Carolyn Burgess. How do I know? I still have my seating chart.
Perhaps the most outstanding memory is of the Accreditation Celebration, March 27, 1974, when the helicopter landed on the circle bringing Drs. Smith and Metz back to campus. Special activities took place that Wednesday and Thursday when there was no school. A special edition of the Trailblazer recorded it.
I cherish my memories of MidAmerica, especially those of the earliest years. It is a privilege and honor to be a part of the “originals.”
