Undergraduate Financial Aid

At MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Office of Student Financial Services, we understand that your financial aid represents an investment in your future.  We are committed to helping you and your family determine the best way to pay for your MNU education.  We will help you explore the solutions that make your MidAmerica Nazarene education affordable.

Chances that you will receive aid are excellent!

The majority of MNU students receive financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, or work study.  Some awards are made on the basis of financial need, others for academic merit or performance, and some for a combination of the two.

Let us work with you to determine the maximum amount of aid for which you are eligible!

Applying for Financial Aid

In order to maximize your financial assistance opportunities and expedite the process, please complete the following steps below:

  1. November: Apply for your Federal PIN
  2. January 1st: Electronically file your student and parent federal income tax returns with the IRS as soon after January 1st as possible (if tax returns will be filed for 2012). Use MNU’s school code: 007032.
  3. Two weeks after filing taxes electronically (four to six weeks for income tax returns filed in paper form), download income information from IRS directly into the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This should be completed before March 1st if possible. Electronic signatures using PINs for student and/or parent are required.  Remember to use our school code: 007032. If your income information is not available to download from IRS, you may enter the information from completed income tax returns. However, this may require the submission of additional documents for verification and delay processing.

Unless you or your parents are unable to complete tax returns by the priority date of March 1st, it is best if you do not estimate income information (use the “Will File” option). If you are unable to complete federal tax returns before March 1st, please contact the Office of Admissions.

Kansas Residents: The FAFSA serves as your application for the Kansas Comprehensive Grant.  To be considered for this award your FAFSA should be received no later than April 1st.  To learn more about your eligibility for other Kansas Programs go to the Kansas Regents' website.  Remember that the state charges a $12 application fee.  The deadline for other Kansas programs is May 1st.

Please complete your MidAmerica Nazarene University Application for Admission as soon as possible. Both federal and state financial assistance require that you be accepted for admission before funds can be allocated. All financial aid must be applied for and finalized by the end of registration week. Funds will be credited to your account and applied to tuition, fees, room, board, and other miscellaneous charges.

Applying for Financial Aid

Start the process to obtain federal loans with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Follow these steps to complete your application.

Which Year FAFSA Do I Use?

The FAFSA you use depends on your program start date. Contact Student Financial Services at 913-971-3298 with your anticipated program and start date if you have not applied for admission when completing the FAFSA.

Application Process

  1. You will need a Federal Personal Identification Number (PIN). Go to www.pin.ed.gov to obtain one.  If you forgot your PIN, you may request a “duplicate” as well.
You will need the following information: Social Security number, Alien Registration number if not a US citizen, Federal tax returns and W-2 information, records of all income. A worksheet on the FAFSA website helps you gather this information.
  2. Complete the FAFSA. Be sure to use the FAFSA for the correct financial aid year. Consult your program start date information to determine which FAFSA to use or ask Student Financial Services at 913-971-3298.
    Free Help Available
Online you will find “Help” buttons on every page of the FAFSA or click “Live Help” to chat with a customer service rep. Call toll-free 8 a.m. – midnight (Eastern), 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or TTY 1-800-730-8913 for the hearing impaired
  3. Indicate on the FAFSA that you want your FAFSA results sent to MNU by entering MNU’s school code 007032.
  4. In about 2 weeks, look for your Student Aid Report (SAR) in your email. If you have not received your SAR within three weeks of application go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select “Check Status of Submitted FAFSA.”
  5. Look for and respond to an instructional email from the Student Financial Services Office sent to the email address on your FAFSA.

MNU begins awarding aid approximately 30 days prior to program start. You must Accept/Decline/Modify each individually offered award online and complete all requirements listed on your Webfor (MNU Access) account.

Financial Aid Policies

plusaWhat is an academic year?

The Office of Financial Services uses a standard academic year for students enrolled in our traditional program. This year spans two enrollment terms (semesters). The terms total at least 30 weeks of instruction. A full-time student is expected to complete at least 24 credit hours during an academic year.

plusaWhat is enrollment status?

Full-time status is defined as taking 12 or more credits in a semester. Three-quarter-time status is defined as taking less than 9 credit hours in a semester. One-half-time status is defined as 6 credit hours a semester. Only the Federal Pell Grant is available for qualified students taking fewer than 6 credit hours a semester.

plusaVerification

Verification is a procedure in which some students are requested to document certain data elements on the FAFSA—including but not limited to income and family size. Primary documents collected are the IRS transcripts for the student and the parents if the student is a dependent. A verification worksheet must also be completed.

MidAmerica Nazarene verifies all students who are selected by the Department of Education and may use its discretion in selecting students for verification. If selected for verification, no Federal financial aid funds will be credited to a student’s account until the verification process is complete.

plusaWhat is Satisfactory Academic Progress?

In order to maintain eligibility for financial aid, a student must make adequate academic progress toward his or her degree. Eligibility for federal financial aid is terminated if a student takes longer than 150% of the time established to complete his/her course of study. Students must successfully complete 66.67% of attempted cumulative credits.

For students transferring to MNU, the total number of credit hours accepted by MNU will be included in the number of attempted and completed credit hours in calculations for Satisfactory Academic Progress.

All undergraduates must achieve the following cumulative grade point average (GPA) to maintain financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress. These cumulative GPA requirements are monitored at the end of each semester.

See the entire Satisfactory Academic Process Policy.

Hours Attempted Minimum GPA Required
1-23 1.50
24-55 1.75
56 and above 2.00
