The Pioneer Weightlifting Team finished in 3rd place at the 2008 Collegiate Nationals Weightlifting meet!  They were just shy of beating the Air Force Academy (2nd) and Louisiana State University (Shreveport) (1st).  The results of the meet are as follows:

The Pioneers traveled to Lamoni, IA and were swept at the hands of Graceland University on Monday. In game one, the Yellowjackets scored 10 runs in the first three innings and MNU fell 10-3. Jake Gill (2-4, R, SB) and Tim Purdin (2-3, R, HR, RBI) had multi-hit games. In game two, six errors contributed to an 11-1 loss in six innings. Gill (2-3, SB), Mike Elliott (2-3, R), Derek Brewer (2-3), and Dave Staton (2-3, 2B, RBI) each had two hits.

The Pioneers were swept by Graceland by scores of 4-3 and 7-3 on Friday. In game one, MNU managed just 4 hits and couldn't come up with a big hit in the final innings with runners in scoring position. Senior right hander Jeff McKinley was the tough-luck loser, allowing just 3 earned runs in a complete game.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead vs. Baker and found themselves leading 5-2 when lightning and rain stopped the game in the 5th inning, giving MNU the victory. Cory Keoppel allowed no earned runs and picked up the complete game win, the third straight complete game for the Pioneers. Trent Thompson (3-3, 2 R, HR, RBI) and Nick Beghtol (1-2, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) had big games at the plate.

The Pioneers are 19-19 after a double header sweep of Manhattan Christian College on Tuesday. In game one, senior high hander Jeff McKinley scattered 5 hits in a complete game for his 7th victory. With MNU trailing 3-2 in the 6th inning of game one, a two-out single from Jake Gill tied the game and put runners at first and third. The MNU baseball team traveled to Atchison, Kansas and took two games from Benedictine on Friday. In game one, senior right hander Jeff McKinley allowed just 4 hits and one run (none earned) as the offense scratched across 3 for the victory. Jake Gill (2-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B) led the offense.

Keith Dixon's pinch hit, two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 7th inning of game two gave the Pioneers a split at Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday.
