Gifts of Securities Gifts of appreciated securities (either stocks or mutual funds) can result in additional tax savings for you. You can deduct the current market value of the securities, up to established IRS limits, and you can avoid capital gains tax that is payable if you sold them. To make a gift of securities, follow these steps: Securities You Hold-Send the unendorsed security by certified mail to MidAmerica Nazarene University (Attn: Office of University Advancement) and include a letter of intent indicating the purpose of your gift. In a separate envelope, send a signed stock power certificate to the same address, making sure your signature(s) is exactly as it appears on the face of the certificate. Your signature(s) should be guaranteed by a bank officer or stockbroker. Securities Held by Your Bank or Broker-Give your bank or stockbroker a letter of authorization requesting that your gift of securities be made to MidAmerica Nazarene University. Please let us know if your are going to make an electronic transfer of securities so we can acknowledge your gift and thank you promptly. Valuation-For tax purposes, the valuation of your gift will be its mean value on the date that the securities pass from your control. If mailed, it is the date of postmark; if your broker makes the transfer on your behalf, it is the day the transfer is made. You will receive a prompt, official gift receipt from MidAmerica indicating the value of the shares on the date of the gift.
Gifts of Real Estate Real estate includes homes, cabins, commercial buildings, land, and other property. Gifts of this nature can be very helpful to the University while also providing you with substantial benefits. Your income tax deduction is for the fair market value of the real estate, as determined by a qualified real estate appraiser. Gifts of appreciated real estate are deductible up to established IRS limits.
If the value of your property is more than you wish to give (or deduct) in any given year, you may make a gift of only a part of your interest in it. As an example, if you own farm land but do not wish to contribute all of it, you may donate a partial interest. The University reviews each potential gift of real estate. Please contact the Office of Planned Giving (913)-971-3280 or by e-mail: {ml0} if you are considering such a gift.
Gifts of Personal Property Gifts of artwork, antiques, collectibles, rare books, and similar property offer donors income tax deductions. If you have something to donate, contact the Office of Planned Giving (913)-971-3280 or by e-mail: {ml0}
