Talent Judging Rules and Criteria

Each Participant is allowed up to 3 Entries ONLY in the Talent portion of MAX. There can only be one entry in a category/medium. For instance, a participant may have three entries in Art, but they must be entries in different mediums such as one entry in Watercolor, one entry in Photography and one entry in Drawing. Or a participant may have one entry in Vocal Solo, one entry in Instrumental and one entry in Art. If the directors or judges find that a participant has more than three entries total or more than one entry in a particular category or medium, then the director or judge will ask the participant which entry he or she would liked judged. If the participant is unable to be reached, the director or judge will decide which entry should be judged in order to bring participants total entries to only 3.   • All Entries will be judged on site at Bell Performing Arts Center.
  • Those Entries requiring a time slot sign up, must be signed up by 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14th. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you are unable to make it to Cook to sign up before this deadline, you may call DeAnne Arnold at 913-219-6558 BEFORE the 6:00 p.m. deadline to sign up over the phone.

Vocal Solo

Male and female will compete in separate categories. Entry shall not exceed 5 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of music must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s music shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. Music must be religious, classical, or patriotic in nature. Original compositions may be used, however notated music must be provided for the judges. All participants must have music memorized. The use of score will result in a 5-point deduction. Participants may be assisted by live, pre-recorded accompaniment or no accompaniment. If participants use pre-recorded accompaniment, it must include printed music and words for judges.

Keyboard Solo & Duet

Entry shall not exceed 5 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of music, with measures numbered, must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s music shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. All participants must have music memorized. Music must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Original compositions may be used, however notated music must be provided for the judges. All participants must have song memorized. The use of score during competition will result in a 5-point deduction.

Instrumental Solo, Duet, & Ensemble

Entry shall not exceed 5 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of music, with measures numbered, must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s music shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. Participants are not required to memorize music. If you only have one actual score, please provide the actual score to the judge and the Participant should use a copy of the score, if needed. Original compositions may be used, however notated music must be provided for the judges. Participants may be assisted by live or pre-recorded accompaniment or no accompaniment.

Vocal Ensemble (small and large)

Entry shall not exceed 8 minutes. (This includes filing into and out of position). Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of music must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s music shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. All participants must have music memorized. The use of score during competition will result in a 5-point deduction. Music must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Original compositions may be used, however notated music must be provided for the judges. Participants may be assisted by live, pre-recorded accompaniment or no accompaniment. If participants use pre-recorded accompaniment it must include printed music and words for judges. Note: Small ensemble consists of quartet or smaller; Large ensemble consists of quintet or larger.

Worship Bands

Song must not exceed 5 minutes in length (points will be deducted if the time is exceeded), and not exceed 20 minutes including set up and tear down time. Going past the total time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction. One copy of music must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s music shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. Original compositions may be used, however notated music must be provided for the judges. Music must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Participants are not required to memorize music but must have live accompaniment.

Creative Writing

You may submit Entries in these areas:

  1. Fiction piece - The fiction piece must be double-spaced, using standard margins and 12-point font.
  2. Poetry - Poems may be single-spaced, using standard margins and 12-point font.

Acceptable fonts are Times New Roman and Arial.

Drama (Sketch, speech, monologue)

Entry shall not exceed 6 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of manuscript must be provided for the judge(s) at the time of competition. All participants performing without judge’s manuscript shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. All participants must have script memorized. Participant may use manuscript of original composition, but must provide a typed copy to judges. The use of manuscript during competition will result in a 5-point deduction. All content must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Not adhering to one of these themes will result in a 5-point deduction of total score.

Human Video (The Acting Out of Songs)

Entry shall not exceed 6 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of words with synopsis of actions discussed must be provided for the judge(s) at time of competition. All participants performing without synopsis shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. All content must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Not adhering to one of these themes will result in a 5-point deduction of total score.

Creative Arts (Sticks, Dance, Color Guard)

Entry shall not exceed 6 minutes. Going past time limit shall result in a 5-point deduction of total score. One copy of words with synopsis of actions discussed must be provided for the judge(s) at time of competition. All participants performing without synopsis shall be docked 5 points from total score. COPYRIGHT LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED. All content must be religious, classical or patriotic in nature. Not adhering to one of these themes will result in a 5-point deduction of total score.

Art

You may submit Entries is the following areas:

  1. General (Watercolor, Drawing, Oil, Acrylic) - All art must be of original composition. Works must be in “good taste”. All art must be matted and/or framed. Each piece should be identified with the artist’s name, church, district, age, grade, and medium used on a 3X5 card at time of entry. Each Art Entry is equivalent to one (1) MAX Event.
  2. Photography - All art must be of original composition. Works must be in “good taste”. All art must be matted and/or framed. Each piece should be identified with the artist’s name, church, district, age, grade, and medium used on a 3X5 card at time of entry. Each Art Entry is equivalent to one (1) MAX Event.
  3. Creative Art (Jewelry, Sculpture, Ceramics, etc.) - All art must be of original composition. Works must be in “good taste”. Each piece should be identified with the artist’s name, church, district, age, grade, and medium used on a 3X5 card at time of entry. Each Art Entry is equivalent to one (1) MAX Event.
