Careers and More Community Transition Partnership Header Image

The Careers and More Program, a Community Transitions Program, partners MidAmerica Nazarene University and Lakemary Center, giving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities a college experience and the opportunity to earn a Careers and More certificate through MNU.

Program Highlights

  • 2-year program, culminating in a (non-degree) Careers and More Certificate
  • Program is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (Financial Aid is available to those who qualify and is based on need. Fill out the FAFSA. )
  • The only Community Transition program to partner with a Community day services program (Lakemary Center Inc.) in the KC metro area
  • Open to both Lakemary clients and non-Lakemary clients

Program Entrance Requirements

  • 18 Years of age
  • Diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability
  • Eligibility determination for I/DD service completed by the Local CDDO
    • Diagnosis from Physician OR
    • Previous ID/DD diagnosis from secondary school Special Education documentation
  • Motivated to participate in community employment
  • Ability to accept and follow rules and expectations, no behaviors that would limit independent functioning
  • Ability to participate in small group activities
  • Independently maintain daily hygiene care and toileting
  • Communicate verbally, interact socially
  • High school graduate or certificate of completion

Program Costs

The Careers and More program costs $554 per credit hour; 48 total credit hours (~12 credit hours per semester). Cost per semester ~$6,648. Payment plans may be arranged. Meals in Campus Center and transportation are not included.

Start Dates

A new cohort will begin in the Fall Semester (August) of each year. Applications due by June each year.
