It’s July and it’s hot in Kansas. It must be time for Mark Woods Rock Orchestra Camp. Mark Woods Orchestra 2Since 2010 several hundred teen and adult musicians and music teachers have made MNU their home for a week of intensive instruction and practice at the camp held in Bell Cultural Events Center each July. Since it is cool in Bell Center, consider attending a concert from these talented artists.

Camp faculty members perform in concerts each night with the final concert of the week featuring all campers and faculty performing in the world’s largest plugged-in orchestra.  This is truly a fun week of concerts!

Concerts are held July 16-20 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets:  $15 advance, $20 at the door, $10 KC area students (with ID).

July 16

Joe Deninzon, electric violin, hailed by critics as “The Jimi Hendrix of the Violin” due to his innovative style on the electric, seven-string violin, and his compositions combining jazz and rock with Gypsy influences, is a musician who transcends many genres. He has worked with artists such as Sheryl Crow and Bruce Springsteen.

Tracy Silverman, electric violin, is lauded by the BBC as “the greatest living exponent of the electric violin.” The world’s first concert electric violinist, he has worked with artists such as the Turtle Island String Quartet, Jim Brickman, and Bob Geldof.

 

July 17

Sean Grissom, electric cello, Cajun cello, is internationally known as the ‘Cajun Cellist.’ Sean has performed his unique brand of Country, Cajun, Classical, Swing, and Rock music from the streets and subways of New York City to the concert halls of Europe and the Far East.

Rachel Barton Pine, acoustic and electric violin, is one of the most-recognized names on the classical music scene today. She made her debut as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony at age 10. Since then she has performed with orchestras all over the world, as well as with many of rock’s biggest names.

 

July 18

Matt Vanacoro, piano and guitar, is a skilled pianist and composer with a strong background in contemporary music and jazz.

Brigid Bibbens, electric violin, is a classically-trained violinist who has performed with major artists in the rock, pop and jazz worlds, such as Josh Groban and Christina Aguilera.

David Wallace, viola, is a solo artist and faculty member at Julliard School of Music.

 

July 19                

The Mark Wood Experience featuring Laura Kaye. Mark Wood, award winning composer, international recording artist, and electric violinist, is widely acknowledged as the premier electric rock violinist of his generation. Mark studied under maestro Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and attended the Juilliard School of Music on full scholarship. A member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra for 13 years, Mark was awarded two platinum and three gold records from his work with them. He has toured and performed with Billy Joel, Celine Dion, Dee Snider’s Van Helsing’s Curse, Lenny Kravitz, Steve Vai, Roger Daltry of the Who, and Jewel.

Laura Kaye’s powerful and dynamic vocal style and range has been compared to Aretha Franklin and Steven Tyler rolled into one. She has worked with James Brown and Aretha Franklin, and has contributed to soundtracks and videos for U2, Lenny Kravitz, Sean Lennon, and Mark Wood. The lead singer with The Mark Wood Experience, Laura has released several CDs. Mark and Laura are husband and wife.
