Parent and Family Resources

Dear Parents and Families:

Greetings from Center for Global Studies and Service Learning at MidAmerica Nazarene University.

We would like to tell you about our mission trip and study abroad programs, specifically the safety precautions that are taken. The MNU Go Global program sends over 100 students every year to many world areas. We send our teams to work with Nazarene missionaries and Heart to Heart International leaders. We know these people to be well-trained, experienced, careful, and committed to empowering locals into ministry. Also most of them have lived and served these countries long term, many for 15 – 20 years.

This type of experience allows us to take care of most of our problems before a team ever leaves. Our hosts are able to guide the ever-changing schedules and situations, and would never willfully bring a team into a dangerous situation. They, nor we, find any glory in risk when it comes to the lives of our students. We are committed to the safest endeavor possible, and are in regular communication with the U.S. State Department, the Embassies of each country, missionaries and leaders in the host country, as well as staff from the headquarters of the General Church of the Nazarene. This constant and consistent monitoring is our rule, and has laid a solid foundation for our program.

Each student has a travel policy included with her or his orientation and training. Team leaders are trained in what to do in cases of illness or injury during a trip, including any necessary treatment post-trip. Thankfully this has been the least utilized aspect of our program, but it is there, allowing us to get our students home to the U.S., usually within 24 – 48 hours.

In some cases it might be difficult for you to contact your student directly, due to the remoteness of the location or lack of access to Internet. Communication will happen with the team and our office. Once a week the team leader will email or call our office with an update, and we will email that info out, or post it on the team blog. If you would like to be on that list, please email us at {ml0}.

Financial Responsibility

Go Global strives to keep program fees as low as possible. The program fee only pays expenses directly related to the team: airfare, ground transportation, lodging, food, ministry supplies, travel health insurance, and incidentals. These expenses are covered for the duration of the trip, except for limited souvenir shopping, when available. Students do not need to bring much cash.

Some destinations will require immunizations that students may not have. Some students may have health insurance coverage for travel immunizations while others do not.

We know that raising support for a mission trip requires dedication, hard work, and faith. Go Global is committed to assisting students in the support-raising process and will help in every way possible. Support-raising instruction and guidance will be provided early in training meetings. Team payment deadlines will be given to each student. All payments must be completed three weeks before the team leaves.

Study abroad costs are covered by student loans, and any available scholarships that the students apply for. Application for these scholarships should be done a year in advance.
