The MNU Men’s Soccer team got back on the winning track this afternoon by defeating Olivet Nazarene University by a score of 1-0. The win came on the heels of a 3-0 loss to Judson University on Saturday. With the win the men move their season record to 2-1.
The Chicago trip started off on a sour note on Saturday with the loss to Judson. In a game that the Pioneers dominated possession they could not find the back of the net and were punished for that futility with three counter-attack goals by Judson.
“We did not have the right mentality in this game,” stated Coach Wardlaw. “We were passive in our attack and Judson took advantage of that with their counters.”
In the game against Olivet the MNU men came out with a mission to play with more focus. It showed right away with MNU having several opportunities in the opening minutes that, except for a couple of magnificent saves by the Olivet goalkeeper, would have seen them take the lead. As it was, that lead came in the 33rd minute from an Oumar Seck goal that was assisted by Michael Shadfar. MNU went into the half with the 1-0 lead. The second half was more of the same with MNU wasting several chances to extend the lead. The defense held firm and Chris Eriksson was able to get his second clean sheet of the young season.
Coach Wardlaw said, “Today’s game was more of what I expect to see from these guys. It was special for me to play against my alma mater and I was pleased with the performance. ONU is a very young team that will do well once the players get a bit more experience. Coach Crew is doing a great job with the program and I expect to see good things from them.”
The Pioneers return home for a two-game set against Friends University and Mt. Mercy on the weekend.
Game times are Friday at 5:15 pm and Saturday at 3:15 pm.
