The dawn of in-conference play brought two victories to the Pioneers, recording wins over Baker University and Culver-Stockton College this week. The win over Baker, 77-68, was brought by strong performances from Megan Balcom and Daria Sprew. Balcom ended the game with 23 points, and Sprew recorded 9 rebounds with her 12 points. The Culver-Stockton victory came highlighted by a double-double from Tristin Wicks, ending with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pioneers will look to improve on their 8-2 record when they travel to Columbia College (Mo.) for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
After defeating Bethel University in Olathe, the Pioneers traveled to Florida to take on Marymount University (Calif.) in the second round of the NAIA playoffs. Both defenses thrived in the match, but a goal in the 58th minute broke the deadlock and ultimately sealed the 1-0 victory for Marymount. The Pioneers end the season with a 13-4-2 record, allowing more than one goal only four times all season.
After a 1-6 start to the season, the Pioneers jumped to a .500 record in the HAAC, defeating Baker University 79-61 in Olathe before traveling to Culver-Stockton College and losing 77-71. Team scoring leader Nate Launius led the team with 26 points in the victory over Baker, and freshman Gabriel Jordan recorded eight rebounds off the bench. Launius and Justin Randall each scored 16 points in the Pioneers’ loss to Culver-Stockton, with Randall and junior Aleksandar Zivkovic each pulling down nine boards.
The Pioneers’ next test will be in another conference matchup, taking on Missouri Valley College on Saturday Dec. 13, at 4 p.m. in Olathe.
MNU head football coach Brian Willmer has been named Region 3 coach of the year. Willmer completed his first year at the head of the Pioneer football program and lead the team to a 9-2 record.
From MNU men’s soccer, Aurelien Norest has made his second consecutive NAIA All-America First Team. Additionally, Jelani Jillo, Atanas Karagyaurov, Jeremie Koffi, Niklas Larsson, Aurelien Norest, and Stephane Philippe have been named 2014 Men's Soccer Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
MNU volleyball’s Zoraida Heredia has been named 2014 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball All-America - second team, and Sofija Berezovska has been named as an honorable mention. Both Heredia and Berezovska have been awarded positions on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region.
