The Pioneers are enjoying a three-game win streak following the beginning of the new semester. On Jan. 14, MNU hosted Evangel University. The score remained close throughout the entire game, and with 24 seconds left, the score was tied at 70. Nick Syrie drained the clock until finding Justin Randall for the game-winning shot. MNU beat Evangel 72-70.
On Jan. 16, the Pioneers hosted the Missouri Valley Vikings. The team relied heavily on three-pointers in the first half, with Jonas Page and Cale Brubaker combining for 18 points off threes alone. Jonas Page would go on to finished with 17 points himself, while Nick Syrie turned in a full stat sheet with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 15 assists, and three steals. The Pioneers will travel to Central Methodist University on Wednesday, Jan. 20 to play the Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
The MNU women’s basketball team has not lost a game since January 1, where they fell to Tabor College. Since then, the team has scored over 70 points each game, and increased their overall record to 14-3. On Thursday, Jan. 14, MNU defeated Evangel 75-51, lead by Tristin Wicks, who finished with 20 points in 18 minutes.
On Jan. 16, MNU hosted Missouri Valley College. A big game for freshman Kalie Uher helped push the Pioneers to a 75-51 victory. Uher came off the bench in the first half, and with three minutes left in the first quarter scored three buckets, a steal, and a block. Kalie Uher finished the game with nine points, hitting 4-of-5 field goals, while Megan Balcom hit five three pointers and finished with 17 points, four assists, and three steals. The next game will be Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Central Methodist University at 5:30 p.m.
On Friday, Jan. 15, a group of runners representing MNU’s track and field team competed at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Missouri. Headlining the Pioneers was Alicia Salazar finishing eighth in the shot put, Isaac Zitterkopf finishing third in the high jump, George Robinson finishing eighth in the 800m run and Briana Blackwell finishing fourth in the 800m run. The next indoor meet will be at Johnson County Community College on Friday, Jan. 22.
