On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the women’s basketball team lost on the road against Central Methodist University to fall to second place in the conference. Megan Balcom scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, boosting her to a career-high 28 points. The Pioneer’s got back to their winning ways when rival Baker University came to play on Saturday, Jan. 23. Despite scoring just six points in the first quarter of play, a strong showing from players coming in off the bench helped MNU down Baker 65-54. Kyleesha Weston had a full stat sheet with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Nathalie Felipe attributed 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. The next game will be on Jan. 27 against Culver-Stockton College starting at 5:30 pm.

The Pioneer men’s basketball team defeated Central Methodist University on Wednesday, Jan. 20, with a score of 87-83. Hudson Welty shot 6-for-7 field goals for 13 points off the bench. Then, on Jan. 23, MNU went head-to-head with Baker University. After trailing at halftime 51-36, the Pioneers began to force their way back into the game. MNU went on a 16-0 run over five minutes to go up by five points, but BU did not go away. With 30 seconds left and the score tied, Nick Syrie drained the clock before driving in the lane, spinning through two defenders, and hitting the basket despite being fouled. Syrie finished the game with 14 points, nine assists, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Jonas Page had a game-high 15 points. MNU will travel to Culver-Stockton College on Jan. 27 to play the Wildcats starting at 7:30 pm.

Indoor track

On Friday, Jan. 22, several members of the MNU track team competed well against local competition. Isaac Zitterkopf won the high jump with a jump of 6’9”. Michael Lewis won the triple jump with a jump of 14.11m. Raiven Ellis won the triple jump with a leap of 10.74m, as well as the long jump with 5.02m. Matt Mayeske finished first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.46. Brianna Blackwell won the 800m run with a time of 2:33.55. Kaylee Shanley won the one-mile race with a time of 5:29.90. Shanley also won the 3000m run with her teammate Halley Dean finishing a few seconds behind her for second place. Victoria Marshall finished third overall in the 400m run with a time of 1:01.16. George Robinson finished second place overall in the 1000m run with a time of 2:36.97.
