Season’s of Life

April 29, 2014 | By | No Comments

“There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under the heavens” -Ecclesiastes 3:1

While thinking about these next few months that are coming up, I have been constantly reminded that we all go through different seasons of life. I have definitely experienced this throughout my whole first year of college. Each season has brought about something new in my life. It’s really cool to see how God works through these things and brings beauty out of brokenness. This year has definitely been a rollercoaster ride, but it has been one great adventure. The fact that my freshman year is coming to an end is such a crazy thing to think about. It seems like just yesterday I was posting my first blog, and still trying to figure out where all of the buildings were located on campus.

Now that I’ve been here for a while, I honestly cannot tell you how thankful I am to have the opportunity to go to a school like this. I have been immensely blessed with such wonderful friends, professors, and faculty that are here at MNU that have come to be like family to me. I have also experienced really great times this year that have given me such cool memories to look back on.

If you’re coming here next year, be excited! Cause this place is pretty awesome. :]

So now that I’m done giving my opinion about how awesome MNU is (maybe I’m a little biased) I want to share with you guys something else I’ve learned lately.

I’ve learned that you don’t always have to please everyone.
I’ve learned that pleasing God needs the most important thing in my life.
I’ve also come to realize that I fail at this a lot and that I can be pretty weak sometimes.
But I also know that God is greater than my weakness.

I want to work harder at remembering that every single day. But the thing is, no matter how hard I try, I cannot do that on my own. I need God’s strength and grace every single day. So in other words,
I’m learning to trust God with that strength and grace even more every day. I just wanted to challenge you guys to do the same thing. Let’s boast in our weakness because His grace is sufficient for us.

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” -2 Corinthians 12:9

Just a little encouragement and I thought I’d let you know what was on my heart. Thank you for reading if you have been! I also wanted to put together some highlights of this past year into one collage of pictures. So here it is! I’ll explain a little more about it underneath:

college life

This is a collage of just some of the awesome things that took place this year. The picture on the far left is of Halloween. This was super fun because Jazmine (the penguin) and I (the fox) made our own costumes, We had a blast doing it and there was a Halloween party that night that was also really great. The picture in the upper middle part of the collage was taken at homecoming, the one to the right of that was taken at a skating rink that was in the downtown plaza, the middle picture that’s at the bottom was when I went to the Rend Collective Concert with some friends, and the bottom right picture was when all of us on campus went sledding outside on one of our snow days!

These are only a few of the amazing times that I’ve had here at MNU. :] I’m so thankful for every single one of them. I love looking back and seeing where God has taken me and it’s crazy to think that he’s already bringing me through a new chapter in my life. I also hope the same is for you. Keep trusting in His plan and looking forward to what new things God may be bringing about in your life.

So guys, that’s all I have for this time. Thanks for stopping by!

In His love,

-Heather Rose :]

Car Problems, Jesus, and Finals

April 21, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

So this past weekend was Easter! Most people on campus went home for the holiday, but that wasn’t the case for me. I actually have had some car troubles this past weekend. This was kind of a bummer for me because I would have liked to go home and see my family over the weekend, but I’ve definitely been learning a lot through it. Not having a car has opened my eyes a lot to how much I depend on it. I have had to ask people to drive me places more during this past week than I ever have had to during this past year. I definitely have learned that I need to not take things for granted so easily. Compared to most people in the world, I am extremely fortunate.

I also want to share with you guys what Easter means to me.

Bunnies, and candy, and Easter eggs. :]

No, those are all great things, obviously. Who doesn’t love those things? But the real meaning of Easter rests on the Truth of Jesus Christ. He came to this earth, was crucified, and rose again to show us this indescribable love. I can testify to this in my own life that this is the truth. The cross of Christ has bore my sins and has given me new life in Him. He has not only transformed my life here on earth, but he has also given me eternal life with Him after this earthly life.

I went to a worship service the other night and they played the song “Nothing Holding Me Back” by Bryan and Katie Torwalt. If you haven’t heard this song, please go listen to it! What I take from this song is thankfulness and gratefulness for what Jesus has done for us. The chorus says:

Nothing is holding me back from you,

Redeemer of my soul,

now nothing can hold me back from you,

your love will never let me go.

I absolutely love this song because it reminds me of the verse in Romans that says:

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who love us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 8:37-39

We are more than conquerors because of what Christ has done for us. What an amazing message that is. This is why I have hope.

This is the reason for the joy in my life.

So I just thought I’d be real with you guys about what I believe and I thought it was fitting to tell you all these things because of the Easter season. :] I hope this gave you some sort of hope or encouragement. If you have any questions or comments please don’t hesitate to say anything!

Also, a little about MNU. I went to a baseball game at Graceland in Iowa this weekend and we dominated. So that’s pretty great! I also went to an Easter service on Sunday at Living Hope Church and there were multiple people that attend this church that were baptized at the end of the service. It was a wonderful celebration. :] After church Lisa Downs, who I mentioned in one of my blogs before this, invited some people over for a Easter Sunday lunch. I felt entirely blessed to be able to have these people in my life and spend Easter with them. It also helped that the food was amazing. :] finals week is coming up as well and I can just tell you now, there will be LOTS of coffee runs and late nights.

But I’m ready for it. Bring it on. :]

Have a wonderful Monday my friends,

-Heather Rose :]

17 days!!

April 14, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello Friends!

I came to the realization today that my freshman year of college is almost over. It’s insane to think about how fast this first year has gone. The feeling is bittersweet! I know there are going to be many exciting things to come in the near future, but it’s crazy how fast these good times have gone by. So yes, there are 17 more days left until summer, counting the weekends. I am SO very excited to finish off the school year and head into more adventures these next couple of months. I am definitely striving to finish strong with my school work and every other responsibility I have until this summer takes off. These next couple of weeks are going to be pretty crazy! I’m sure I’m not the only one with a busy schedule this week though! It seems that everyone I’ve talked to lately is pretty swamped. But we can do it!! :] only a couple weeks left!

On a lighter note, God has done some super cool things with the clouds lately, so I thought I would share with you guys the beauty that I’ve seen this week! :]

This was all in the time span of one week! God is so creative and I am in awe of His beauty! :]

Well friends, If you’re finishing up these next two weeks like I am, keep going! Don’t give up cause you’re almost done! :] Also, remember just how beautiful God is. He is the creator of all things and is worthy of our worship. I have also been reminded lately that if we don’t take the chance to worship God for who he is, the rocks and the trees will. That’s how mighty He is. :] remember that this week.

Until next time,

-Heather Rose :]

an MNU filled weekend

April 6, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hey friends!

So I just want to brag on our faculty here at MNU for a second. First of all, they are loving, caring, kind, fun, funny, and really want to be a part of your life. I say this because I went to a baseball game this weekend with Lisa Downs and we had a blast! There were also many other faculty members there that made it so fun. I also love that they come and support us at whatever it is we are doing. I always see faculty and staff at sporting events, choir shows and many other events that are held at here. Lisa is the Director of Undergraduate Admissions at MNU. First off, she offered to drive to the baseball game, (It was about 20 minutes away from MNU). So she drove me, then in-between the two games we went to Quick Trip, she bought me some tea, some giant chewy sweet-tarts, (which are amazing by the way, (I had never had them before so she convinced me to try them) and she’s just a blast to be around. I know she really cares about me and I am so grateful to be in a place that has faculty and staff that have an interest in the things going on in my life. It is a huge blessing. :]

Also, just this morning I got to go to Junction City Church of the Nazarene to lead the church in worship! This wasn’t just a worship team from MNU going to this church though, there were about 30 of us representing Mid-America! We all had a wonderful time and the people at the church were so loving and welcoming towards us.

Here are some pictures of the baseball game and church this morning!:

This is who I sat with at the game on Saturday! From left to right is Lisa, me, Laurie, and Becca. :]

This is all of the students who traveled to Junction City today attempting to take a photo (Note: I’m the only one looking at the camera, and I’m also standing very awkwardly)

This one is A LOT better. :]

Well guys, I hope you have a better view of what it’s like to be apart of things here at MNU just by reading this. :] Only a couple more weeks and then summer will be here! I CAN’T WAIT.

Until next time,

-Heather Rose :]

antiqueing and sports

April 1, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello blog readers!

So if you don’t know this about me, I love to go to antique stores. I know a lot of them back home, but I haven’t had the chance to really roam around the Olathe/Kansas City area to find any within a good distance of MNU. This past weekend, I had the chance to roam. I went to an antique store called Lone Elm Antique Mall. From the outside it doesn’t look like a huge store, but on their flyer that I took after I roamed through this place, it says that have over 120 booths filled with antiques and various vintage things.

I know to some who are reading this, antiques might not be of any interest to you, but if you like to go to antique stores like me, are going to be living in Olathe, already live in Olathe, or attend MNU, this is a great one to go to! :] I also went to a baseball game this past weekend (picture below of my friends and I). It was a little chilly, but we managed with a blanket!  I wish I would have taken a picture of the baseball field, or part of the game, but I didn’t even think about it! (Sorry guys). I also went to our final four game for our basketball team! Our student section was getting pretty intense during the whole thing. The game was super nerve-racking, but it was definitely a huge accomplishment, so that made it all worth it! :]

2014-03-29 13.43.07

These girls are a complete joy to my life.

Well friends, I’ll leave you with some encouragement. I’ve been learning lately to not take things in my life for granted. And also that through hard times, God is still good. He is still the creator of the universe, and the creator of you and I. He knows everything and we need to not worry about every little detail in our lives. He is NEVER far off. Even if we are going through times that are tough, giving it to God is the absolute best thing you could do. He knows the depths of your situation and wants you to know He is walking right beside you through it all. :]

Thanks for stopping by!

In Christ’s love,

-Heather Rose :]

P.S. Intermural volleyball is starting up this next week and I am PUMPED! :]

spring break shennanigans

March 25, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hey friends!

So I tried posting a blog last weekend, but for some reason the whole thing disappeared. So I hope you guys see this one! :]

Last week was SPRING BREAK. Most people from MNU went to cool places like Florida, or Houston, or Africa, or anywhere else in the world. I definitely just went back home. Wichita, Kansas that is. Even though I didn’t go anywhere awesome, I did really enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. We caught up on life, watched movies, and went to Starbucks… A LOT. I have about 4 or 5 of my closest friends that are working there. So lets just say that I get a lot of free coffee. :] I don’t mind it at all. :]

Also, the Starbucks in Wichita just expanded and now has people play music in there if they want to. This last week my friend Zack Manuel had a show there (he is also employed at this Starbucks) and if you watch The Voice, you’ll know my friend Kaleigh Glanton! At Zack’s show, she ended up playing some songs as well! I’ve known Kaleigh for a while now and am so happy for her that she got a chance to be on The Voice! And that she did so wonderful! :] Here’s a picture of her! The picture at the top of my blog is one from when she did her blind audition!

2014-03-21 20.48.48

This is Kaleigh performing at Starbucks!

If you haven’t seen Kaleigh’s audition yet, or you don’t watch The Voice, you should click on THIS LINK and go watch it! She’s amazing. :]

So guys,

My spring break was a wonderful time of relaxation and helped me to get more energized for this last home stretch of my freshman year at MNU. I can’t believe how fast the time has gone by, and I’ve loved every second of it! Thanks for stopping by!!

MNU Mock Rock 2014

March 10, 2014 | By | No Comments

ATTENTION BLOG READERS: You DO NOT want to miss out on this awesome video of Mock Rock! This is basically our schools talent show that took place here on the MNU campus in our Land Gym. ( I do realize that the video I first posted was only 28 seconds long, but I have the full version up now, so go watch the full one!) :] sorry guys!

Check it out cause there are some awesome clips of people showing their talents, and just being hilarious.

In the first clip is a group of MNU students performing a skit to the song “What does the Fox say?” and if you don’t know who Granny Franny is, go check out Britney’s blog about her! She’s pretty awesome! :] At the end of this skit, she takes off her fox mask, everyone realizes that it was her, and the croud goes crazy. :] It was definitely a surprise to many students. Also, both my phone and my ipod died in the middle of this, so i didn’t get the ending where they announced the winner, but if you were awesome and you watched the video all the way through, the last guy to perform (“YOYO Matt”) was the winner!

So guys, i hope you enjoy and get a glimpse of the wonderful activites that are held at MNU and catch a glimpse of the sense of community here that i am constantly SO thankful for! Sorry this wasn’t a video of the basketball game like i said it would be, but that is coming soon! I hope you got a laugh or a smile out of the Mock Rock video! Thanks for stopping by!

Update On Life

March 3, 2014 | By | One Comment

Hello Friends!

So this week has been super crazy! I had two interviews, two tests, and was in a van with seven other people for a total of fourteen hours this weekend! Its been quite the adventure!

This past weekend I got the chance to travel with a worship team and also the Improv team here at MNU. We went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which is about seven hours away from Olathe. There was so much to this trip and we had so much fun! All of this caused me to forget to take pictures of everything. I am deeply sorry about this, but I can tell you that we all had a wonderful time there. We were also all kind of worried about the weather because there was supposed to be some significant snowfall right when we were going to be heading out for Iowa and also when we were heading back! We ended up being perfectly fine and had no troubles getting there and back. It was definitely an answer to prayer.

So that is just a little summary of what’s been happening in my life here at MNU lately. Things can get pretty overwhelming sometimes with business of homework and social life, but I know for me personally, it is stretching me every single day to realize how to handle situations and balance everything in my life. Through every trial in life there is a lesson to be learned. Here’s a verse that’s applicable to that!:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” -James 1:2-4

If you haven’t read the book of James, go read it NOW. It’s full of wonderful things. :]

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will reviece the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” -Colossians 3:23-25

I think this is exactly what worship is. We can give God the glory in everything we do and work at everything will all of our strength because we know we are serving the Lord Christ. :] Even if it’s something as simple as doing our homework.

So guys, sorry I don’t have a lot, but be expecting a video of one of our basketball games next week! We are hosting a tournament here and I hope the video helps you get a better view of how these sporting events take place here at Mid-America!

Until next time,

-Heather Rose :]

Hello Friends!

So this weekend I had the privilege of going on a retreat called Epiphany, and wow was this amazing! There were about 50 of us from MNU there, and a couple people from other colleges as well! This retreat was about finding our calling, or really, figuring out what our vocation or occupation should be.

When this retreat was over, I didn’t really experience an epiphany.. (sigh) but I did gain a lot of clarity about who I am in Christ, and that my vocation right now is to let God work through me to further His kingdom in this world. This retreat focused a lot on our joys and our sorrows, and how we can enter into community and share with one another in our joys and sorrows. Then, when we come together and share in those things, we can lift them up to God and let him use those things however He wants to. It was wonderful to be a part of such an amazing community of people this past weekend who are passionate about spreading the love of Christ into the world. I feel beyond blessed to just be a part of it. So here are some pictures of the place we stayed at!

2014-02-21 17.53.57

How could I post a blog without putting a sunset/cloud picture in it? :] That’s right. I can’t. This was on the way to the retreat! This place is called YouthFront and it’s absolutely beautiful!

2014-02-22 15.29.13

This was the really long sidewalk/trail that we had to walk up and down every day to get to our cabins! This was definitely a work out.

2014-02-22 15.46.59

We got some free time to explore around the place on one of the afternoons, and this is what I found. Isn’t it amazing? :] I was surrounded by tree’s with a beautiful view of a lake. This for sure was a place of quietness and peace that I most definitely needed.

2014-02-22 15.44.34

This is another view of the lake at a different angle!

2014-02-22 10.49.34

This building was where our chapel services were held. I know everything looks so dead right now because of the weather, but It really was pretty cool looking while we were there.

2014-02-22 17.04.39

This is a view of the inside of the Chapel. These services were really traditional. We sat around the outside of the chapel while someone who lives at the camp played worship songs/hymns while we all sing together. He also would read some scripture and we’d all pray together. I really enjoyed this because they let us stay in there even after the prayer time was over, so a lot of people would just stay and pray for as long as they wanted to. It was quite refreshing to have that time just to sit in the Lords presence.

2014-02-21 19.40.15

This is a picture of what our discussions looked like. These were amazing and very insightful!

2014-02-21 18.41.21

One of my favorite things about this retreat was that they offered coffee to us, pretty much the whole time we were there. It was wonderful, and I definitely took advantage of it. :]

Well guys, that’s all I have for this week. Once again, this was another amazing opportunity I got to have spending time with an amazing community of believers and encouraging one another in our faith. I am refreshed.

Until next time,

-Heather Rose :]

Church, cheesecake, and coffee shops

February 17, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends! :]

So this second semester of college can get pretty hectic sometimes! Everyone is thinking about what they’re going to be doing this summer and maybe even for the next school year! I wanted to share with you guys just a few of the different, exciting opportunities that are offered here at MNU and inform you what they are all about!

(And take note, these are only a few of the many opportunities that are offered here at MNU!)

Personally, I am looking into auditioning for SERVE teams for this summer. If you don’t know what this is, it’s a traveling team of MNU students that represent the college at different Nazarene churches and camps throughout the whole summer. They have multiple teams that you can be a part of, there’s the worship team, sponsor team (the counseling team), Action Pact (our improv team), and we just added another one which is our student preachers team! I am trying out for the worship team for this summer! If you want to know even more about this, here’s a link to the part of the MNU website that gives you more information than I can give you!

The second thing I want to tell you guys about is the RA positions. I know that if you’re reading this and you’re going to be an incoming freshman, this doesn’t apply to you right now, but as you come here and get to know your RA that you will have for the rest of the year, start thinking about if you would want to be one for your sophomore year! It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to be an example to maybe the freshman class coming in the next year, or even an RA in the upperclassmen dorms that the people who live there can go to for help with anything. That’s what I’m thinking about doing this next year as well! It’s crazy to think about how fast this year has gone by, and we only have about 8 more weeks of this semester left! So these are just 2 of the things I am considering for this next year. There are so many cool things that you can be a part of here at MNU, and if you’re thinking about coming here next year, do not hesitate to get yourself connected with them! You will not regret it!

Anyways, this coming week is our spiritual deepening week! We have this once every semester for a whole week. This means we have multiple services throughout the whole week with a worship session and a message that follows it. These are always so great to go to because it is really refreshing to come and worship with everyone, and also make sure we are keeping ourselves in line with God’s will for our lives. These services also bring about transformation in peoples lives, and this isn’t because of the people, I believe it’s because God is there, present, and has the power to change lives. :] It’s really awesome to see God moving through these services!

Here’s a picture of College Church where these services are held! This was actually at one of the services that was going on last night! (Isn’t it beautiful?):

2014-02-16 18.02.42

It was also my birthday this past Tuesday, so I wanted to show you guys some pictures of how lovely my friends are. :]

2014-02-13 21.46.09

Everyone was super busy on my actual birthday, (last Tuesday) so that next Thursday, I invited some of my friends to go to the cheesecake factory! This was a great idea, but also a really bad one. We all had classes that next morning, and we didn’t get back to the dorms till around 10:30 that night! With a stomach full of cheesecake. But other than that, it was so much fun, and i had a wonderful time with these amazing friends. :]

2014-02-13 21.14.11

Here’s just SOME of the cheesecake that we got to choose from! :]

2014-02-13 22.01.15

This was my cheesecake! I got a chocolate mousse cheesecake (that can’t remember the name of right now) but seriously….i almost died it was so good.

2014-02-11 18.46.29

Now on Tuesday night, which was my actual birthday, i went to my aunts house and had dinner with my aunt, uncle, and two cousins! I absolutely loved having a home cooked meal on my birthday, and they even baked me a chocolate cake with chocolate icing! They also had chocolate ice cream to go with it! I was in heaven. One of the things that I’ve learned in college is to appreciate the home cooked meals you get, every once in a few months. :] If even that.

Well, I promised that my next blog post would be more exciting so i hope it lived up to your expectations. :] Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I tried going to Starbucks in the afternoon this past Sunday…….BAD IDEA. if you’re wanting a quiet place to go and do your homework on a Sunday afternoon, do not go to a coffee shop. It’s insane. Luckily, i found 1 seat open at the 3rd coffee shop i went to. The picture at the top of my blog shows how busy it was at the Starbucks i ended up at.
