New Semester Update!

February 1, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

Well we have reached February finally.  It’s a new year, new semester, so I thought I would bring you an update from my second semester at MNU.

My classes are relatively more challenging compared to last semester, however I have found them pretty enjoyable.  My schedule goes:

MWF:  Orientation to Psych, Old Testament, Life Span Development, Human Sexuality (let me tell you that one is quite an interesting/awkward/exciting class, if you are a psych major this may be one you may want to take)

T/Th:   Physical Science and Prob and Stats

So that is what I have been up to lately.  Between classes, nannying, and school events, you could probably find me in a study room at the library with some good friends.  (And as short of a walk as it is… I will most definitely be driving as long as it going to be soooo cold!)

Another place you could find me this semester is watching basketball.  Whether it be Sunday/Monday night intramural boys basketball, or our Pioneer boys demolishing Baker, you could find me cheering on the sidelines!

Yes we take pictures of ourselves instead of the game.  Go ‘Neers!

IMG_2575

Also there are some awesome things to do in Kansas City on the weekends! Last night you could have found me at Winter Jam! And it was awesome!  I think my ears may still be ringing!

Ya no big deal or anything, but the drummer for Newsboys was spinning at a 90 degree angle… Crazy!

IMG_2615It was an awesome night of praising the Lord with the talents He has given to us.

Oh hey Lecrae :)

IMG_2606

I also like to watch movies and hangout with some of my favorite girls.

From Left to Right: Mckenna (my roomie), Rachel, Me, and Randi :)

IMG_2531

Also this semester has already consisted of more Applebee’s half-priced apps runs.

So that is about it… nothing too crazy but hopefully you get the idea of a pretty busy but fun semester already!

Thanks for stopping by!

Seize The Day

January 25, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends,

So it is nearly approaching midnight and life is pretty good right now.  Today a theme has been placed in my mind that I thought would be good to share.

Seize The Day

So often we just go through day by day thinking about what we are going to do next… your next class, your plans for the evening, and what not…  And so often we miss the opportunities that are constantly surrounding us.  What if we got off our iPhones, and started seeing who was around us who needs to see the love of Christ.

So often we think “once I’ve graduated, or once I’m married, I can do this and be happy and what not.”  But let me say the Lord has something better than that! He has something for you right now! I catch myself doing this all the time!

A couple weeks ago the Lord placed an opportunity for me to minister to someone.  I wasn’t sure, and even a little bit nervous.  I kind of put it in the back of my mind for a long time.  Then I was reminded again and again until I finally took some initiative and went out and finally took hold of the opportunity given.  It took me out of a place of comfort.  But the Lord doesn’t call us to sit in our room and keep to ourselves.  He calls us to go out and make disciples, to go out and radiate His very light to those who need it.

So yet again another blog with another challenge… I challenge to you go Seize The Day!  Use this day that the Lord has made to be share His love!  And taking up opportunities and ministering to all those around us, is a part of building a community.  MNU is all about the community, and whether you already attend here or are thinking about it, this is what we do.  This is what we should do as a community of Christ followers.

Don’t let another day go by living in the future or on your phone without seeking an opportunity to spread the joy of the Lord.  And I will leave you with lyrics from All Sons & Daughters, “You have called me higher, you have called me deeper, and I’ll go where you lead me Lord.”

And that is all on this late weekend night…

Thanks for stopping by!

Advice Session 3 | Dealing With College Stress

January 18, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter break!  Right now life is all about getting back into the swing of things… New classes, new transfer friends, and for me a new roommate!

Now for me when life starts to get kind of crazy (going to classes, working, trying to get homework done, keeping a semi-clean dorm room, and attempting to maintain a social life) I get a bit overwhelmed.  But there are a few things I can always rely on!

1. Spend time with the Lord!  This is by far the most important and helpful thing you can do! Just taking a break from life for 15 minutes to read God’s word and to cast worries onto Him is a big relief!

2. Listen to some music!  You can really listen to any kind of music (I am in love with Frank Sinatra and a lot of classical music lately) but anything works! Especially some good worship music! (I love All Sons and Daughters) Listen to it while you are cleaning, doing homework, or whatever!

3.  Try to keep your room clean throughout the week!  Instead of waiting until it gets unbearable… make sure each day you clean up a little so you don’t get overwhelmed with stuff!  Now it may not bother you as much as it bothers me, but if you are like me it helps!  I can’t sit and do homework in a room that just looks like a mess!

4.  Take a nap, or commit to going to bed early every once and awhile!  Making time for sleep is important so make it a priority to take a little nap or go to bed an hour earlier than normal for a night! A good nights sleep can make a big difference in your day!

5.  Give yourself a break and hangout with some good friends!  Studying and working is important… But don’t work yourself too hard! Hangout with some good friends!  At MNU we have tons of movie nights, play ping pong, and go to Applebee’s for half-priced apps! No matter what you do… make sure you give yourself a break to have fun!

We also went bowling for an ASG event!

Start the semester off right! Don’t overwork yourself too early on!  There is no need for stress!  You need to work hard, but don’t do it to the point of wearing yourself out and then not be able to finish!

Hope this helps all you students!  Even if you’re in high school!

Welcome 2014! {Word of the Year}

January 10, 2014 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

I can’t believe Christmas break is coming to a close… and I absolutely can’t even comprehend we are living in 2014!  Where has the time gone?!

So for this weeks blog, in honor of the new year, I think it is only fitting to share with you something that my church has done for the last couple of years in the new year.  Our pastor challenged us last year to choose a word of the year.  This “word” would be a theme of the year for your walk with the Lord.  At first I thought it was kind of a weird thing, but I prayed about it just to see.  I felt like my word of 2013 was trust.  And man, did I have a year of trust in 2013!

trust in the lord

It was so cool at the end of the year to look back and see where the Lord was faithful.  Trust is not an easy thing for me or most anyone, but I loved seeing God prove himself over and over this year just by me deciding to let go.  So often I want to control everything, but by letting go and trusting the Lord, I have seen Him at work a lot more clearly.

2013 had a lot of challenges and a lot of change (something I am not exactly fond of).  It seemed like there were few ups and a lot of downs.  And it’s those times that are the hardest to trust.  It has been a definite learning process, and I don’t have it all down (not sure if I ever will completely) but it helps me grow in my walk more than I ever imagined.

This year my word of the year is love.  And although that sounds a lot more exciting than the word trust, the Scripture this word is aligned with is Revelation 2:4 {Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first}  This year my walk with the Lord is going to be challenging me to rediscover why I do everything.  I serve Him because He is my first love.  He paid it all, and I owe Him everything yet He only asks that I follow.  And rediscovering that will be my journey.  My journey to step out of complacency and a stagnant faith.

So if you’re up for it… give it a try!  It is so amazing looking backwards in December and seeing what God did!  Just ask the Lord to give you a word, or maybe you could just ask for a Scripture!

I hope you all had a great Christmas break and a Happy New Year!

The Reason For the Season Reflection

December 28, 2013 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!  Just throwin a quick blog post at you over some reflections I have had this Christmas break!

I have lately been thinking a lot about grace.  I know it’s weird to think about forgiveness and grace around Christmas, usually that’s an Easter topic.  But I have realized this over the last week, Jesus was born and he lived and died to extend grace and love to all of us.  WOW!  His grace is something to reflect on not just around his death and resurrection but in His birth and all the times in between these celebrations.

I often forget about the grace the Lord has extended in my life.  But what a great season to remember why He was born in the first place.  I have fallen time after time again, and it’s so easy for me to get frustrated.  But the fact that the Lord is always there offering grace with His hand extended to lift me back up is incredible!

I feel like as Christians today, we so often have the “do it yourself” mentality.  But in fact the Lord didn’t call us to do it ourselves because that would defeat the purpose of why He died.  The Lord has called us to live out in His unfailing grace and love, and to strive to be like Him.  We will fail, but when we look up to catch the hand extended from the Lord, we will find grace and love to continue in our walk.

Reflect on his grace this Christmas break, and don’t forget to walk in it!

Advice Session 2 | Modest is Hottest?

December 14, 2013 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

Happy Christmas break to you all!  Today is part two of my advice giving series.  This week there was only one topic that made sense to talk about… and that was modesty.  I know that may seem weird… but I have been thinking a lot about it.  WIth the whole Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this week and the endless instagram pictures of Christian girls I know dressed provocatively, I just feel like it needs to be addressed.  Many people may not see this, but maybe I can give some advice that may help at least one person.

Now I have advice for girls and for guys on this topic so I will break it down into two sections.

GIRLS

Let me just say, we have it hard sometimes.  It’s like the girl world is always a competition, who has the best outfit, who has the most friends, who has the best boyfriend, etc.  Even as a Christian woman it is hard to escape these competitions and pressures.  It is almost like our society tells us we must look this way or act this way to get the attention of a boy, and in a lot of cases it has gotten a lot of success.  So we wear that skin-tight dress because that is what seems to work for other girls right?

Well unfortunately that is probably the case.  I mean why wouldn’t a barely dressed woman grab someone’s attention?  Now I am not blaming men by any means… they were created that way! That is why I believe modesty is so so important!  I mean no girl wants to be the one that causes a man to stumble.  But we so often forget about that.

We attract by the way we dress and present ourselves.  As women we longed to be loved, but do you really expect to receive love from a guy that is only looking how you are dressed?  Sure if you dress modest you may not get the same looks, but you will be making sure you are attracting the right kind of guy.  If you dress immodest you may get some looks and attention, but you are not going to be the girl a guy is going to bring home.  Besides that, show some respect for yourself in the way you dress, you will receive the same respect.

I mean c’mon girls!  It breaks my heart seeing these pictures and reading these tweets about woman not comparing to this woman or that woman.  Why do you believe that?  Because according to Scripture we are worth more than rubies!  So we should act like it and have respect for ourselves.

worth more rubies

And… let a true godly man get to know you for you!  It may take some time waiting, but not all is lost with our society!  Beyond attracting the right man, having respect for yourself, and by protecting men from stumbling into sin, it is what God call us to be.  God calls us to be daughters of the King and to honor Him with everything we have including our bodies. My biggest piece of advice I can give you is to instead of comparing ourselves to the Victoria’s Secret Angels, to compare yourself to the Proverbs 31 woman.

BOYS

The best thing you can do is to help encourage your sisters in Christ.  It is not easy to be a girl in this time, as it is not easy to be a guy.  So let’s help each other out!  By giving your attention to those that choose to honor the Lord, only helps encourage them to continue in their walk to pursue their journey of being a woman of God.

It may be hard again to wait for those kind of women but they are out there!  And when you find one, treat her with high respect and honor!

I hope this helps, and for some of you gives encouragement!

Advice Session 1 | Studying for FINALS…

December 7, 2013 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

So I decided to start a series on my blog!  I am going to be giving advice on miscellaneous subjects throughout the rest of the school year.  My biggest passion in life is giving advice to people… that’s what I’m studying in school!  So not only is this great practice for me, but I also know that I enjoy reading people’s thoughts when they are extremely passionate about it and authentic… And hopefully you can take something away from it!

This week I felt it only fitting to talk about… studying.  I know most of us cringe at the very sound of the word, but it is inevitable in high school and college life.  Finals are coming up next week, and let me tell you I hope I can take my own advice!  But I decided to take what I’ve learned and what others have learned from this semester and give you some last minute advice. :)

Finals_are_coming_meme

First of all, try your best to start in advance.  Now I am one of the biggest procrastinators you will ever meet, so this is something I need to work on to.  But when it comes to studying, especially in college, overnight crams just don’t get it done.  Also last minute studying brings upon unneeded stress and not a lot of sleep. Do yourself a favor and begin studying a week before.  Spend an hour a day reading over your notes, creating a study guide, or whatever you need to do so that you can spend the last day going over things you don’t understand.  You can also find help with tutoring and from your professor easier if you start in advance and find the right questions to ask.

My next tip would be to figure out what kind of studier your are.  Do you study better alone or in groups?  For me, I am not typically a very motivated person.  Although I am fairly independent, I work better in groups because of my “chill personality” (basically I get lazy).  Now if you’re a talker, you may not want to study in groups if you want to get anything accomplished.  I know it may be uncomfortable because your personality type longs to be with people, but in the end you will have accomplished more working alone.

Another big one I think most of our generation struggles with is putting away the electronics.  I know your phone is legitimately glued to your hand… but it will be a huge distraction! It always is for me anyway! I would recommend to grab a cup of coffee and/or a snack and get COMFORTABLE. I am not talking in front of a t.v.!  Find a quiet place and get comfortable… you may end up staying there for awhile.

This next tip was something I never did in high school, but in college I have had to do quite a bit   That is… read your text book.  I understand, it’s soo boring.  But in college there will be things on the test that you will not know just by listening in class. Now I have learned a bit of a cheat on this one over the course of the semester.   What I do is read over my notes, then I head over to the book and find where it talks about what I read in my notes.  I learn a lot more examples and get a greater understanding of the concept after doing it that way.  I don’t have to read the in between stuff, but just learning more than what is in my notes has been very successful so far.  This may not work for all of your class (for instance math and some sciences) but it’s a start.

My last tip is more of a plead… GET SLEEP.  It is so important to sleep before exams.  I have always done better and felt more confident when I have had a good night’s rest.  It may seem dumb and overrated but believe me it works!  Studies have shown that sleep helps you retain the knowledge that you have studied.  It may seem uncool… but you will feel a lot better and remember a lot more!

Hopefully this helps! Happy finals! ;) Oh and may the odds be ever in your favor…

Gee thanks.......

 Gee thanks…….

Thanksgiving in a Nutshell

December 2, 2013 | By | No Comments

Hello friends!

Classes are up and starting again at MNU after a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We had three different Thanksgivings this year with my family, and I got two of them on camera! This was also my first year going Black Friday shopping… which was an experience to say the least.  Didn’t get much accomplished but I did pick up quite a few movies for our movie nights in the dorm. (If you didn’t know, Walmart has 2 dollar movies! Check it out next year!)

So here is just a snippet into my family life over the holiday! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

It’s the Holiday Season… So Let’s Be Thankful!

November 23, 2013 | By | 2 Comments

Hello friends!

It’s another great day to write a blog and share with you my thoughts!  The past few weeks I have been thinking a lot about thankfulness.  It makes sense considering we are approaching Thanksgiving (which by the way is my favorite holiday!).

I was listening to a sermon at my church a few weeks ago about this idea of thankfulness.  It’s funny how often we use words on a regular basis, but never really dive down deep and figure out what they really mean.  My pastor talked about the difference between gratitude and thankfulness, thankfulness being something more than just a feeling.  “Gratitude is like wrapping a present, but never giving it.”

This has been a new revelation for me these past weeks.  Thankfulness is gratitude expressed. How often do I feel gratitude for what people do for me, but never show it?  I would say a lot, and the difference between the two is significant.

My pastor challenged us to write three things down we were thankful for each day of the week, and to share them with one another.  I thought it was such a great challenge that I thought some of you guys would consider trying it!  The importance of writing it down and sharing it is important because it takes it a step further than just thinking about it in your head.  It requires action.  If you find yourself writing a person’s name down, share it with them!  If you find yourself writing about food and shelter, volunteer and bless those who don’t have those accommodations!  The easy part is thinking of them and feeling gratitude, but let’s take it a step further and be thankful!

These are the three things I wrote for today!

1.  New Experiences! My MNU family!

I have been so thankful for this new stage of my life.  Meeting new friends, learning new things in new ways, and being apart of a new community!

IMG_1988

2.  My Brother and Sister!

They are such a support for me, and I love them very much! Plus they are just really cute ;)

553034_10200919093727404_1830344704_n

3.  The Month of November

November is my favorite month of the year! We have a 9-1 Chiefs team, we have a Jayhawk team that beat Duke last week, we have the Missions Conference at my church (my aunt and uncle are missionaries and I get to see them!), we have pretty fall trees at the beginning of the month, we have Christmas music at the end of the month, and we have Thanksgiving!! What else could be better?

trees part 2

That’s my blog for the week!  Accept the challenge I give if you are so brave… Oh and if you are looking for a church in the area, check out Cross Points Church in Shawnee!

Thanks for stopping by!
