Lessons I’ve Learned My 2nd Yr of College

April 24, 2014 | By | No Comments

spring-header

There is an endless list of lessons I’ve learned my second year of being at MNU.

However, If I named them all, I’d be writing for a week straight–no joke.

So here it is–a few valuables that I think everyone can benefit from:

Completing homework before Sunday.

When-I-try-to-do-homework

This theory sounds ridiculous. But trust me, it’s the best thing in the world. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but there has been one day this semester where I’ve actually gotten all of my homework done on a Saturday and had nothing to do on a Sunday–imagine that, having the intended Sabbath day to relax. Now, I’m not saying that everyone should live by this rule–heck, I can’t even keep up with it–but it really does take a lot of weight and stress from your shoulders.

Getting Involved.

Funny-gif-Backflip-fail

I’ve Probably said this before . . . and I’ll keep saying it: getting involved is one of the best things you can do. It will solve almost all of your problems: If you’re worried about making friends–get involved by going to events. If you’re worried that you’re going to be broke–get involved with working on campus. If you’re worried that no one will hear your voice–get involved with theater and choir. If you’re worried you’re going to be single for life–get involved with the ministry majors (wink wink.) Okay, that last one was a joke (Kinda). But now you have a clear idea on how getting involved at MNU can be beneficial.

Patience

Three Words My Friends: Patience is virtue.

Netflix

tumblr_inline_mqp9j7ahEh1qz4rgp

So Netflix is probably one of the greatest inventions God has blessed us with.( Thank you Jesus!!!) And I don’t think I need to explain myself when it comes to this subject. But if I’d suggest one thing, I’d tell you to use it wisely–there are times when it can be a double-ended sword.

Dreams are real and they do come true.

GIF-DISNEY

This seems cliche, and like a line pulled from a Disney movie, but it’s a legit statement. I’m not going to sit here–laptop warm on my lap–and lie to you over the internet. But in all honesty, MidAmerica Nazarene University has made it possible for so many dreams of mine to come true. I’ve been encountered with so many opportunities. Half of them shouldn’t be possible, but they are. Literally, my heart jumps with glee. I am so blessed, and my goal for all of you is to have that same experience–for Christ to fill your hearts with love and security in all things that you do. Guys, dreams are real, and they do come true. And I’m excited for everyone to experience that here at MNU.

That is it for this Week’s blog!

The Real Reasons Why You Should Come To MNU

April 16, 2014 | By | No Comments

excited-baby

Not that you really need to be persuaded because, by now, we already know that MidAmerica is an outstanding university with even more outstanding students. But in case you needed to be reminded, here’s a few reasons why you should come to MNU.

1. Fact: MNU is one of the few universities that start later in the fall. So, when University A and B have to start school on the 17th, we get to start school on the 27th–say hello to four months of summer!

2. An average classroom size is 1:14 ratio–so that means plenty of one-on-one time. ;)

3. It’s a community where everyone knows your name–not joking.

4. The professors here are lenient and understanding–they literally care about your LIFE!

tumblr_inline_mqe5kq5uuV1qz4rgp

5. World’s of Fun is closed down one day a year, every year, for the students at our university and Nazarene districts across the states–and it’s cheaper, too!

6. Spicy Chicken Thursdays–Yeah, you can’t get any better than that!

7. FREE LAUNDRY!!!!!!!!!!

tumblr_m5n9rqEtY91qbaj4uo1_500

8. You can walk to every class you have on campus and be there in five minutes or less.

9. We have tons of community events like glow with the flow–imagine big bounce houses,       Chick-fil-a, and glow sticks.

10. I’ll be a Freshman RA–Umm, yeah. Be excited.

tumblr_mps27miqXO1sqa8uao7_400

11. School ends on MAY 2ND!

12. Lastly, it’s a community that truly loves you for you, and wants you to embrace who you are–seriously, it couldn’t get any better than that.

Come to MNU future Pioneers! WE WANT YOU!

Till next time,

Peace and Love,

Britney!

Pioneer Day!!!!

April 9, 2014 | By | One Comment

pre-spring-headers_misc1

***The video above is from two years ago! (Yes, I’m in it…)

Incoming freshman, you should be pumped for one thing, specifically, this summer.

And that, my friends, is Pioneer day! Whoo!

Happy_dance

I know a lot of you have been asking about what it is and when it is, so today’s blog is directed toward that specifically.

The What:

Pioneer day is a pre-enrollment day for incoming students and freshman. At this lovely event you will have the chance to register for classes, complete the registration process for next fall, meet your future roommate, or get a roommate! During this event you are also given the chance to meet your advisor (for your major), and set up classes. You will take and, hopefully, receive your student I.D. card. You’ll find out what your mailbox number is, and talk about financial stuff like payment plans, scholarships, and grants.

The When:

You are given three different dates to attend this event in 2014: May 10th, June 14th, and July 19th.

And, you might even have a cool video like the one above!

To Register:

Go here: Register!

A Short Blog Post (And an Update on the foot!)

April 2, 2014 | By | No Comments

running-in-rain-header

Good News, Ya’ll!

I don’t have GOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Praise, Jesus.

Bad News: I have tendinitis, and it still hurts.

Last Thursday, I went to the clinic on 175th street (which was really cheap for a broke college student who doesn’t have insurance) and was correctly diagnosed with Tendinitis, and if any of ya’ll are familiar with it, you know how much it hurts.

So I was on bed rest for four days–it was terrible. However, in those four days, my foot healed enough for me to walk on it without using crutches. This was a plus, but I still have to take my prescribed meds. :/

Also in those four days, I ventured out into the blog world and created a blog dedicated to young writers, aspiring writers, and those who love to read. If you’re interested, check it out! Basically, In my blog I share everything I know about writing–from getting published, to getting rejected. It’s still a work in progress, but I try to build onto it everyday. So if you like funny reads, and GIFS (aka moving pictures for those who don’t speak Tumblr slang) check out the blog.

So that’s it for this week’s blog. I didn’t do as much as I hoped to.

More to come next week!

Well, I definitely wasn’t expecting this…

March 26, 2014 | By | No Comments

cropped-rain-header

It started out slowly–almost like a whisper.

Then, throughout the morning/afternoon, it grew louder.

The pain intensified. It was like a burning sensation in my ankle.

Whenever I put pressure on it, It felt like someone was taking needles, setting them on fire, and digging them into my ankle. Why must pain like this exist?

There was a moment–a few moments, actually–when I assumed I was imagining the pain. I thought, “Britney, this has got to be in your head. There is no way that this is real.” But it was real. It was real, and it was consuming me.

It wasn’t till I talked to a dear friend, Roger Alexander, when I realized what my problem was.

I have Gout.

tumblr_md771hgguQ1rzv8a3

So what the heck is Gout?

From the popular WebMD,

Gout is a kind of arthritis. It can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, usually a big toe. These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues.

Gout is caused by uric acid in the blood. But when uric acid levels in blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints. For me, it was in my ankle.

To be honest, I don’t know much about it, and crutches are on the way, but this new pain sucks!

I also read that uric acid build-up can be triggered with stress–and boy, let me tell you, stress and I have become the best of friends.

I’ll probably get checked out soon! And I’ll give an update if anything else happens.

Well, I definitely wasn’t expecting this . . .

Check out next week’s blog (I’ll actually be blogging about something beneficial! Haha)

Till Next Time,

Peace and Love

Spring Into Classes (The Four Year Plan)

March 12, 2014 | By | No Comments

classroom

Classes are the best part of your day, right?

If the answer to that question is yes–kuddos to you. For me, it’s definitely not applicable.

For the most part, I like my classes, I do. I really like the learning part, but, at this point, I’m just so ready to get out of my general education courses. I’m ready to dig into the niddy-griddy, and start my Cooperate Communication courses!  (check out my major right here!)

One thing they don’t tell you about college is constructing your four-year-plan. A four-year-plan is basically a map of classes you have taken and will take during your course at MidAmerica. This plan will keep you on track, so when graduation rolls around, you already know how many credits you’ve earned and from what class. In the same way, most advisors require you to have your four year plan printed and done before you meet with them about classes. That way, the only thing left is to make corrections and answer any questions you might have. BUT, incoming freshman and transfers, DON’T FREAK OUT! Your advisors will be more than lenient with you, and they don’t expect you to know any of this right out of high school or a junior college.

However, when you do get here–I know I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again, and continue to say it–KNOW YOUR MAJOR. Trust me, I’m only saying this from the kindness of my heart because, as you probably already know, I’ve changed my major five times, and that’s a lot of four-year plans. Granted, I didn’t have to make any four year plans first semester, freshman year; but other than that, I’ve at least made three, and three is too many for me.

Zooey-Deschanel-Puts-On-a-Sad-Frown-In-New-Girl-Reaction-Gif

Recently, as of last Friday, I found myself working on my four-year-plan for my cooporate communication degree, and it took me at least two hours to get it all planned out. If you don’t know this yet, college classes are based on hours. For example: In my Composition class, I will receive a total of three hours because I attend three times a week, and an hour each time I attend.

Anyway, for my degree, I need a total of 126 hours to graduate: 77 hours will be from my general education courses, and 49 of these hours will be from cooporate communication classes. I know this seems like a lot, but trust me, it’s not.

The best part about this, though, is that the MNU website will help you infinitely! If you want to play around with your major, here’s the list of them (here). And in that link, you will be shown how many, and what, education courses you need, depending on the major you choose.

Good Luck!

Also, on a side note, check out my new camera! Isn’t she lovely?!?! Her name is Ella.

The Truth About Campus Center

March 5, 2014 | By | No Comments

food_header

It can’t be that bad, can it?

The truth is, when it comes to Campus Center, you either love it or you hate it–but most MNU students fall in-between.

When students come to visit–for example, SCOUT, Senior Visit Day, MAX–the food is at an all-time high. Everyone is in a good mood because there are actual food choices that we can live with. I mean, the Campus Center staff spoils the newbies; they shower them with grilled food, special dips, soups that taste good, and other delights. The bread is always fresh; the fruit is hand-picked from the ripest trees, and the desserts are to dies for.

But when there is no one to impress, everything changes.

Now, I’m not saying that the food is terrible–because it’s not. Compared to most Nazarene schools, MidAmerica has the most choices to choose from, and the taste of it is at least a 7.5 on a scale from one-ten.

But I am saying, once you’ve been around for longer than a semester–long enough to gain the freshman fifteen–everything starts to taste the same…and that, my friends, is no bueno.

600

However, where there are cons, there are plenty of pros.

If the food sucks that night:

-There are always sandwiches and wraps at the sandwich bar–you can never go wrong with a sandwich and chips.

-There’s a waffle maker…YUM

-There’s at least six different cereal types to choose from.

-There’s soup!

-There’s so much ice cream…I’m not even sure what all the flavors are.

-And, as of recently, they’ve added to baby grills–that’s endless opportunities right there!

IF all else fails, you can buy a packet of Ramen Noodles for 97 cents at Walmart. :)

Oh, but I’m not done yet. There are two special days that MNU students can’t get enough of: Wednesday nights and Thursday lunches.

S2GagR_09

Wednesday Nights are typically called meat nights. There are usually steaks, fried chicken strips and shrimp to choose from–those are the normal choices, but they differ from time to time. And every now and then, we have theme night; it could be all Japanese food, all French food, or all Brazilian food–you really never know until you get there, and really, a lot of the food is quite good.

On Thursday afternoons, there’s spicy chicken and fries—Nuff said.

I guess Campus Center isn’t all that bad!

I hope ya’ll enjoyed this week’s blog!

SCOUT, My Birthday, And other things this week.

February 27, 2014 | By | No Comments

2014-02-20 03.56.31

First and foremost, I seriously hope you enjoyed that video! (Things You Just Don’t Hear MNU Students Say.) Shout out to those who created it…cuz it was amazing! (P.S. I watched it like five times the day it aired…)

Anyway, on to other news, today is an exciting day because it’s SCOUT!!!

SCOUT simply stands for Students Checking Out University Turf. Basically, Juniors, Seniors, and even Freshman or Sophomores, come to campus on a Thursday and Friday. It’s an overnight event where students will get the chance to sleep in the dorms (exciting), attended a few classes of their choosing (also exciting) and eat in our cafeteria!!! (VERY exciting!!!….Uh, kinda…more or less….we’ll talk about that in a different blog.)

But the besides all of that, they will get the chance to experience student life–which is what’s important. There’s  basketball games, open mic, Land Gym, and a whole heap of events. Unfortunately, this is the last SCOUT event of this school year, but if you’re interested in attending the one on the fall, you can sign up right here: http://www.mnu.edu/undergraduate/events.html#scout

So my Birthday is this week…like tomorrow!!! And, I know I sound really excited, but, to be honest, I think it’s just going to feel like another day to me. I think that’s what happens when you age..or maybe it’s just me. But here’s a fun fact: My sister and I (who is two years older than me), share the same birthday. Well, not technically, she was born on February 29th, but since that day only comes once every four years, we share. The neat thing, though, is that she’s pregnant…and has just started to go into labor–that’s INSANE!!!! If I have to share my birthday with two other  people, I’m going to go bonkers. I love sharing, but this…this is WOW. Though, it’ll be a great birthday present. I mean, who doesn’t want a human for their birthday?!?!?!?!

Here’s a photo of my sissy and I on our birthdays! Happy Birthday, Precious!

That’s all for this week, folks!

My Not-So-Normal Tuesday

February 20, 2014 | By | No Comments

Plane copy

I’m back and ready for action!

I can’t even begin to describe how crazy my life has been these last two weeks. SO much has happened in SO little time, and there are not enough seconds to breathe….

But then again, that’s just college: Deadline after, deadline after, deadline–it’s exhausting and it’s a habit I can’t adjust to.

Anyway, I thought I’d share one of my days with all of you!

Recently, my admission’s job asked me to take a student to the airport, but she wasn’t just any student, she was a future Pioneer. She had been in Kansas for a couple of days, checking out the University’s turf and auditioning for band. (If you’re interested in checking out the campus for free, click this link!)

When her days were up, I drove her to the KCI airport, so she could catch her flight at two that evening. However, as always, nothing ever goes as plan. We arrived only to realize that her flight was delayed, and then cancelled, and we were sitting in the airport for hours. With the Grace of God, one of the sweetest ladies re-booked the flight, and our future Pioneer was able to make it to Ohio later that day.

It’s days, like those, when I am so thankful to have a job here on campus. If it weren’t for admissions, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet an amazing girl and build a relationship.

I couldn’t be more blessed.

A big shout-out to one of our future students, Jillian! Thanks for visiting our campus, and being totally spontaneous! MNU can’t wait to have you back! Whoo! Go class of 2018!

Snow, Frozen, and My Day In A Few Gifs

February 6, 2014 | By | No Comments

tumblr_n0bm51G6471sqac7so1_500

This week MNU had two Snow Days!!!!!!!!

So Imagine having to start school on a Thursday. . . It’s the pits!

With That Said, here is a brief overview of my day with a few Gifs.

I woke up like a princess this morning….well, not really.

tumblr_n0jieiyH7I1sjrkneo2_250

It was freezing in my Spindle apartment. I felt like I was in the middle of a frozen forest with no clothes!!! Yikes!

I then proceeded to get ready for the day.

tumblr_n0jpivaAWC1t7zv2yo1_400

I probably didn’t look as great or as happy as Bill Cosby though!

Then, with integrity, I faced the outside world. And let me tell you…it was tough!

tumblr_n0a1lsDWcc1qjxavvo1_500

tumblr_inline_n0jk3f1oW11qemu9r

I’m not even overreacting…it was THAT bad outside.

Then I went to class…and that was fun…

tumblr_inline_mletrzd2nY1rgr041

When that class was over I was done for the day, and I headed off to lunch. It’s Spicy Chicken Thursday Ya’ll!!!
