Santa, Snow, and Studying

December 9, 2013 | By | No Comments

Hello friends :]

So, right now I am currently at Starbucks.. drinking coffee.. and studying for the 4 finals, added on with 3 unit tests that I have.

In college, for me at least, coffee shops and MNU’s library are two of my favorite places to be. Lately, I have spent a lot of my time at both of these places. For me today, Starbucks has taken a little bit of the stress off of the insane amount of information I have to cram into my brain this week. So thank you Starbucks!

Also, this is maybe one of the only places that I get wifi…so that’s cool.

This past week/weekend was just full of everything Christmas! Let me show you guys some pictures:

SANTA! He came to the Merc! If you don’t know what the Merc is, it’s our merchandise store located in our Campus Center.

On this past Thursday night, my friend Jazmine and I had a movie night and we made coffee in our room! It might have been a slight mistake though because it was around 10:00 p.m. when we made it. Lets just say that I was up pretty late that night. But it was delicious, so it was definitely worth it! This isn’t really Christmassy, but I thought i’d share with you guys my coffee masterpiece.

This is a picture from our Freshman Christmas sweater party! I came a little late so I missed out on the dance party, which was really upsetting, but other than that it was a wonderful time! There was hot cocoa, egg nog, snacks, and our MNU improv team (Action Pact) came and did an improv show for us!2013-12-07 00.52.50 Okay, I know what you’re thinking.. “Who is this super attractive lady with a Rudolf nose coming out of her mouth?” Well my friends, this is my RA Faith Koker. She is the bomb. I mean just look at her. :]

 elf

To start the Christmas season off right, some of my friends and I decided to watch Elf this weekend! I think I have maybe seen this movie 15 times, but it never ever gets old. :]

piano

MNU also got some snow this weekend! It was a really light snow so we barely got any at all, but it was still snow! Which makes it feel even more like Christmas! I also took this picture in our piano rooms and I thought it really captured just how beautiful they are. Well, I think they’re beautiful at least. I do find myself spending a lot of my time in here as well as in the library and Starbucks. :] You can also kind of see the little bit of snow we got on top of the roof of my dorm outside the window.

Well guys, I don’t know about you, but I am ready to be done with this week, not just because it’s finals week, but because that means next week is the start of Christmas break! It’s going to be wonderful having a whole month off to see my family and friends again. I will definitely miss my MNU family though.

Until next time,

-Heather Rose :]

Thas’ why we Friends!

November 27, 2013 | By | No Comments

This is the Thanksgiving Break edition of the “Thas why we Friends” series here on my blog.

I set out to make a creative and funny, yet informative video with my friends. A parody, a funny high school story, or maybe try to gauge the impact that college has.

Instead, this is what I got…..

Thanks Katie and Amber, nothing changes.

Keep on and keep God,
Joey

Social Media: What Is It Really?

November 16, 2013 | By | No Comments

I was sitting in my Sociology class a couple days ago when MNU’s beloved professor, Bo Cassell, brought up an interesting point.  Why do we have social media? What is the point of it in today’s society? Why is it so valued? How has it affected our culture today? We discussed our theories. But what stuck out in my mind was Professor Cassell’s statement, “Now days, we do things in life so we can post about it.” MIND BLOWN.

This got me thinking, what would our lives be without social media?  Think about it.  We go to a party, and we tweet at least a couple times about how awesome the party is.  We get together for coffee with friends and we have to instagram a picture with our friends and our Starbucks beverage.  We are approaching Thanksgiving, so we must post a status on Facebook about all the things we are thankful for.  The status’ I tend to see look like:

I am soooooo thankful for the most amazing family in the world, the greatest bff’s a girl could ask for, and the hands-down best boyfriend ever xoxoxo love you baby. #soblessed #myboyfriendisbetterthanyours #ilovehashtags

(okay that was a bit extreme ;) but side note, have you ever seen those hashtags? My boyfriend is better than yours? Because let’s be real, is he really? Who are you even talking to? Who is he better than? Everyone? Ah, oh well, love is blind so they say :))

Anyways… none of these things are bad! It is great to express thankfulness and gratitude (stay tuned for my next blog).  But look at the theme here, if we get down to the sociological factors, we all do this to put on a persona that our life is perfect and that others should want to be us.

Professor Cassell mentioned in class that in recent years, marathons have never been more popular. Why? Because everyone wants to post about it! If someone goes skydiving, bungee jumping, or something else extreme I guarantee they will post about it on social media.  Now I’m not going to lie, if I went skydiving I would definitely be posting about it like there’s no tomorrow. But you get the point.  Take this week at MNU for example, if you didn’t know (which if you don’t know and you attend this school, you probably are not active on social media) this is TWIRP week.  You can read some other blog posts if you want more information, but basically it is a girl ask a guy event.  But think about how many posts were made just about TWIRP!  Oh and let me guarantee you that on Sunday/Monday there will be some ice-skating pictures up from our MNU ASG event.

instagram

Now I am not saying that any of this is bad, because I am guilty of it as well! And I am not even suggesting that this should change.  But be aware of these persona’s people try to create; there are some serious dangers.  We assume our sister is happy because she just instagramed a picture of herself smiling, we assume that our cousin is all good with life because she just changed her relationship status to “in a relationship”, we assume that our friend is having the time of his life  because he tweets about all these parties he is getting invited to.  The problem is we assume, and miss out on the personal communication.  So I am challenging you, not to change what and why you post on social media, I am only challenging you to see your friends beyond it.  It is easy to appear to be doing great, we do that on purpose daily. But get behind the surface of a persona on social media and you find a real person that may need a friend.

So that’s my blog for the week! It got a bit deep at the end, but I hope you take the challenge! I plan to!  Oh and by the way—if you are looking for a good class at MNU I recommend Sociology with Professor Cassell! It is great! (P.S. Don’t stop posting your TWIRP pictures! I only used it as an illustration! I love seeing them!)

Thanks for stopping by!

Cafe con Leche

This is my life!!

Can I just tell you how many hours of sleep I’ve gotten this week? Maybe like 3 total every night. Some wise person once said that you can choose 2 of the following: Good grades, a social life, or sleep. Don’t get me wrong, sleeping is one of my favorite activities. It seems like I have intentions every night to be in bed by midnight. Rarely does this happen, and the nights that it does, I’m up thinking about all the things I need to do until 2 or 3 am.

The point of this story is not to tell you about how horrible life is as an academic social butterfly. I’m here to tell you friends, there is a solution.

COFFEE!!!

At this point in the semester, I have officially replaced water with coffee. I’ve never been a coffee person until college.  One of the nice changes made in Campus Center this year is unlimited scans. Scanning in for coffee no longer needs to be justified! A good friend of mine, Rachel Boan, taught me a couple months ago how to create the perfect iced coffee in campus center. I know it might sound like I’m exaggerating, but I crave it more than I crave Starbucks iced coffees (which is everyday of my life.) It creates the perfect refreshing drink for meal times. Coffee is no longer a hot dessert after a meal, it’s to be enjoyed at all times! This little things in life, I suppose.

Be watching for a How-To by Rachel this week, and happy November!

Hi! I’m Allegra. I’m a junior marketing major and I have a passion for leadership and public relations. In other words, I like to host and throw parties/events!

I have lived in Mexico for the last 2 summers, so a total amount of 6 months. I am fluent in English, Spanglish, Sarcasm, and Mumble.

I’m involved with MNU Teen Challenge, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and I work in admissions.

My favorite color is orange and I’m addicted to Starbucks, all things Kardashians, and reality TV in general. Please note: the above title are lyrics. I like all kinds of music, especially of the teeny bopper variety.

Last week I met Joel Osteen. Call me a 45 year old soccer mom if it’s what you feel the Lord is leading you to, but I love that smiling man!

meeting Joel! also known as the happiest man on earth!
