Once Upon a Sunday Afternoon

February 25, 2014 | By | No Comments

Greetings Bloglings.

I’d like to start by giving a shout out to Jordan Warren, member of the Pioneer Class of 2018. He asked the question, “What really goes on when class is out of session?”

Answer: MNU PD.

…well, maybe not after every class. Hopefully this will paint the picture:

One Sunday afternoon, my friend Konner and I got this idea to make a video speculating a day in the life of our very own Campus Safety, with influences from hit TV shows The Office and Reno 911. A trip to Goodwill and a few phone calls later, this video was created.

What’s interesting about this video is that we ad-libbed the whole thing and made up the plot as we were going. Also interesting: no one in the video was friends before it was created. I had never met JT or interacted with Cole. I called up Sean (Officer Mahoney,) who I only knew from class, and Lauren, who only knew Konner and myself.

Needless to say, a force to be reckoned with was born that day, and I’m happy to call them all my friends.

Jordan (and any other future Pioneers out there,) I hope this captures a little bit of the community on campus, and I hope you like this video!

11 thoughts

January 24, 2014 | By | No Comments

So yeah, just 11 thoughts that I wanted to share. Here they are written out:

11. It’s always a frightening moment when you’re not sure if all that came out was just gas.

10. There is no “morning after” or regret when a person follows Christ. (Without going into any details, there have frankly been times in my life when I woke up in the morning wishing I had made different decisions the previous day.)

9. Faith, particularly faithfulness to Him, is risky.

8. Vulnerability too is risky; but I have found that the reward far outweighs the cost.

7. Don’t just mask the smell… with Deodorant, or cologne, or body spray, or Febreeze… Instead: take a shower, or wash your clothes, or clean
your room, or all of the above. But consider doing all of the former on top of the latter.

6. Procrastinating only makes sense for a little while, but eventually…

5. All real truth is God’s; fear not where you find it.

4. Virtually everyone, at every level, enjoys and learns best through stories.

3. Err on the side of grace; often we have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes.

2. I’ve learned that whenever I flush the toilet, I will no longer leave my eyes open.

1. He isn’t just an all-powerful, all-knowing, omnipresent Being; He is a Person, He feels, He loves, He cares-for all; all includes you.

P.S. this video would not have been possible without it being shot and edited by a great and talented friend of mine: Blake Nelson. Blake is one of the Resident Educators for our school. If you read last week’s blog, just know that he’s a “friendly, neighborhood” kind of guy.

So Sunday night, after hanging out with Jamie, I run in to this guy: Philip Prado!! Former MNU Blogger :-D

Sorry it was blurry, but I was on one leg to show off our matching clothes! Plaid PJs and Plaid shirt!

Thanks again Jamie!

Later in the week, before my last final, in the office of the School of Christian Ministry and Formation, Randy still doesn’t fear being silly in public. He’s next to one of MNU’s most beloved Professor: Kelvin St. John. He teaches both New Testament Literature and Discovering the Bible (Both Gen. Ed. classes for all MNU Students.)

Randy's wig is ridiculous. St. John's hair is glorious.

Then Last night, St. John treated Jamie and I out to some Chinese food! Once again, I love how so many professors here are so personable!

The one and only St. John is incredible. That is a fact.

Now here’s a pic of a good friend of mine, across the hall: Matt.

Obviously this pic had to be taken since we were matching!

Alright so tonight, my youth group that I serve as an intern for: Well Rooted (From Living Hope Church of the Nazarene) had a Christmas party!! Ugly sweaters were “totes obvi” encouraged:P

And don't worry that mirror was broken and "repaired" before I got to this RA room:P

Here’s a shot of the group not knowing I was taking this pic haha

And of course there was a white elephant gift exchange. Here’s a short clip of my gift acquiring. Keep scrolling to see better pictures of the great decorative gift I scored!

Here are two pics of the skull now safely and not stolen in my room.

[Course that’s not easy though])

Y’all are loved!

In other news, the high today was 20 degrees. This snow from Thursday is easily still seen around campus!

I also still await the day when I can have another dream come true…

I mean I have experienced a white Xmas before, but that was when my age was still in the single digits! (9 years young)

Thas’ why we Friends!

November 27, 2013 | By | No Comments

This is the Thanksgiving Break edition of the “Thas why we Friends” series here on my blog.

I set out to make a creative and funny, yet informative video with my friends. A parody, a funny high school story, or maybe try to gauge the impact that college has.

Instead, this is what I got…..

Thanks Katie and Amber, nothing changes.

Keep on and keep God,
Joey

MNU Vball beat Baker! Catching Fire was pretty leegit & Jamie Furnas You’re Amazing

November 23, 2013 | By | No Comments

So last week you got to see our MNU Soccer team’s video, here’s our Volleyball team’s video:

Now’s here are the highlights from the HAAC tournament Final versus Baker: If you see in the first few seconds I guy with curly hair and dancing with crazy legs, that’s Luke Letsinger one of our Student Chaplains. Then to the side am I with my friend Nathan in red pants and a beanie:

I forgot to mention that Wednesday at Kairos (the Wednesday evening chapel for college students at College Church of the Nazarene) we helped package about 160 Thanksgiving meals-made possible by the generosity of the people at College Church of the Nazarene.

Here are some of the typical Thanksgiving groceries minus the turkey!

She is madly in love with Jesus, intelligent and witty, funny and silly, confident yet humble, and she is obviously beautiful: I’m clearly a SPOILEDLY blessed man.

the blazin’ challenge

November 10, 2013 | By | No Comments

So, some of my friends and I decided to go to BWW’s (Buffalo Wild Wings) this weekend and a few of them decided to plunge to their death.

and by that I mean they decided to do the Blazin’ Challenge.

If you don’t know what this is, it’s when you have to eat 10 traditional wings with BWW’s BLAZIN hot sauce coated all over them; In under 6 minutes! You also can’t use any napkins or drink anything until you are completely done with the challenge.

And my friends decided to do this!!

All I have to say is… props to them! I don’t even like Mexican food, so I would have died in 2 seconds.

So here are some pictures, and I also captured the whole thing on video, so above this you will find 3 guys who decided to man up and die. Two out of the three of them finished! Caleb Denny, who was the one that didn’t finish in time said, “It’s because I’m white.” :]

2013-11-09 19.28.10

From left to right: Daniel, Asher, Jazmine and I. We were the 4 that decided not to partake in the challenge, but were very excited to watch what was about to go down!

2013-11-09 19.53.40

This is somewhat of a bad picture of everyone, but the three guys in the back, Marcken, Thomson, and Caleb, were the ones who did the challenge!

2013-11-09 20.01.23

Before the challenge…..

2013-11-09 20.14.16

After the challenge.

2013-11-09 20.14.58

In the end, I think they would all say that it was worth it!

2013-11-09 20.42.44

But most of all, the main reason that it was worth it was because the guy sitting behind us, (you can see him in the picture above this one) bet the guys that if they finished the challenge, he would give them $50! So all three of them ended up getting paid to do this!

So here you are blog world. I thought this would probably be enough amusement for my blog this week! I hope you enjoyed stopping by!

love,

Heather Rose :]

I Have Hope

November 7, 2013 | By | No Comments

On Monday I looked up one of my favorite songs on YouTube and found this video for it: Watching it helped inspire me to write what I shared in the video.

On Sunday Living Hope Church of the Nazarene we are starting a new series called Focused Living:

This is my pastor John Marra. He also teaches Pastoral Care and Counseling here which I am told by every single person I know that has taken it, that it is one of the best if not best class they've ever had!! I look forward to taking it next fall!!

Now check out this video of Apollo Robbins, talk about skill and misdirection! Pastor used in as an illustration to show that where our focus is, matters!

Also this past week I got to go back to YouthFront Camp West and manage the paddleboats and canoes! That was fun to be back in that blessed place!!

Well lookE there at the there sunset! B.E.A utiful if you ask me!

Though this was taken after class, I thought I'd show this first. This is Professor Flemming. Randy Cloud has said before that when they need to send MNU representatives for our religion department, they send Flemming because he's the smartest of all of them! I've gotten to pick his brain and he's evidently a man after God's own heart. Thanks Brother Dean for being who you are and living into the man of God that He is calling you to be!!

Though this was taken after class, I thought I’d show this first. This is Professor Flemming. Randy Cloud has said before that when they need to send MNU representatives for our Religion Department, they send Flemming because he’s the smartest of all of them! I’ve gotten to pick his brain and he’s without a doubt a man after God’s own heart. Often when he reads Scripture his eyes light up with excitement and joy. And when he recites Scripture, we get a more “alive” version of the Book that we all desire to base our lives around–because of the One of whom its about!! Thanks Brother Dean for being who you are and living into the man of God that He is calling you to be!!

So Dr. Flemming was my New Testament Literature Professor and now this semester he's my Biblical Interpretation professor--which I gotta say this class has been tremendously helpful in my understanding of Scripture and helped me gain an attitude that is more careful and humble in seeking to interpret it as His message for us! Also, the candle to his right is something that he does every class period, because fire was often associated with the Holy Spirit in the Bible and Professor Flemming is always reminding himself and us that he is relying on Him to lead the class!! #likeaboss.

Here's the book that Dr. Flemming just recently had published! It will be used for his Biblical Theology class! Woot Woot. He signed my copy and after I get back from Xmas break having read it, we will get to discuss it!

Just a little bit of what is written on the back of the book!
