Expansion of Mentoring Program to Serve All Majors

Aug. 2, 2017 - by Carol Best

More career-focused opportunities for juniors at MNU will launch this fall with a newly expanded mentoring program. Built on the positive impact of the Executive Mentor program, a joint venture between the School of Business and Alumni Relations, the expanded program will be available to students of all majors.

CareerLife Calling

While many universities offer mentorship opportunities, this one is uniquely positioned to assist students in more than the exploration of career.

“We are intentionally encouraging the exploration of a student’s calling,” says Christine Snyder, director of Career and Life Calling at MNU. “This is more than a professional introduction to the world of work. We are seeking mentors who will listen to students’ stories, share how they have found purpose in work and life, and are willing to build a relationship to help guide them.”

By sharing with one another, Snyder says mentors can help students recognize how past experiences can fit into their next steps in education, work experience and volunteer or personal endeavors. Of course, they will still help students refine a resume, suggest industry contacts and recommend internship opportunities.

Students and mentors in the Executive Mentor Program say the experience was beneficial. Bryce Anderson, vice president commercial lender with Bank of Blue Valley, has been in the program for three years as a mentor.

“When I was in college, I didn’t have a great counselor,” he says. Working on his job search by trial and error, he adds that having a mentor is “crucial to helping a student lay out their path.”

Anderson agrees that MNU’s professors provide good [career] insight, but that adding another layer of mentorship gives students an even better chance to become successful in their job search. A mentor can continue the relationship he says, even if it’s not in person, and give insights on best practices when challenging opportunities come along.

Anderson was mentor to Eduardo Heringer (’17) who is now a staff accountant with MarksNelson.

“I really enjoyed the program and the opportunity to spend two years with a student as we developed a good bond and were able to work on several aspects of professional communication and behavior,” Anderson says.  “I hope that the program will continue and I look forward to the opportunity of working with a new student.”

While the expansion of the program is in development stage, Snyder encourages juniors in any major to apply by contacting her directly at crsnyder@mnu.edu. As for mentors, she is looking for alumni, parents and community members who are at least eight to ten years out of college in all fields. Potential mentors should register at MNU’s mentoring network.
