Founding Faculty Mourned

Founding Pioneer Faculty Member Mary Alyce Galloway, 86, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, in Longmont, Colorado. Mary Alyce joined the faculty in August 1968 to teach English. Later she became the reference librarian until her retirement in 1995 when she was honored with the title of Pioneer faculty emerita.

Mary Alyce was known as a tough but fair professor who took a genuine interest in her students and helped many students become English teachers and better writers. As a librarian, she found great joy in assisting students find research and literature for assignments, long before the Internet was widely available.

Mary Alyce was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Longview, Washington, to Chester and Eva Miller.  She married Chester Galloway Sept. 1, 1950, and graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in 1952. She was crowned Homecoming queen in her senior year at Northwest Nazarene.

Mary Alyce held master’s degrees in English literature from University of Kansas, and library science from Emporia State University.

After their children were grown, Chet and Mary Alyce enjoyed traveling, often offering their assistance to missionaries and educators. An active member of the Church of the Nazarene wherever she and Chet settled, she loved to travel, sew, crochet, read and chart her family’s genealogy.

Mary Alyce is survived by her husband Chester, their children Sherry (Richard) Hannon and Jan (Tim) McIntire; grandchildren Natasha (Josh), Richard “Buz” (Tara), Nicole (Zack), Reid, Ashlie, Tevan, and Genevieve. Sherry (’79), Jan (’80) and Nicole (’08) and Nicole’s husband Zack (’07) are all MNU graduates.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at 1 p.m., at Longmont Church of the Nazarene, 2111 Mountain View Ave, Longmont, Colorado, with burial at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributing to: The Mary Alyce Galloway Scholarship at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Share condolences at howemortuary.com
