Gala Raises $450K for Scholarships

President’s Honors Surpasses Fundraising Goal

April 15, 2013
The 2013 MidAmerica Nazarene University President's Honors Gala raised $450,000 for student scholarships.

In its second year, the 2013 President’s Honors gala event and auction raised $450,751 to benefit scholarships for students who attend MNU. Held at the Cook Center on MNU’s main campus, 481 guests enjoyed an evening of student entertainment, fine dining, and silent and live auctions.

It is fitting that this year’s event was again held at MNU’s Cook Center. University President Dr. David Spittal honored the late Dr. Ray Cook and his wife Elaine, long-time supporters of MNU. Dr. Cook, a previous chairman of the Board of Trustees, passed away in 2012. “There are very few who have been more enthusiastic and passionate about MidAmerica Nazarene University than Ray and Elaine Cook,” shared Spittal during the evening’s events. The Cooks were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for leadership and support of MNU.

The evening’s live auction featured a variety of items that sparked animated bidding. A pie baked from Mattie Uphaus’ signature recipe sold four times for a final total of $8,350, and a winning bid of $15,000 for the President’s Scholarship Challenge was one of the highlights of the evening.

“We have much for which to be thankful,” shared Spittal. “Even though stories of the past continue to inspire us, there is a new story to be written; there is a new dream for the university that is capturing our imagination.”
