High School Students Compete for MNU Scholarships

Oct. 14, 2015 - by Russell Thayer

Scholarship Challenge Weekend Scheduled for January 2015

For high school students who excel in the classroom, MNU is rolling out the Scholarship Challenge weekend, scheduled for January 22 and 23 of 2016. During the event, senior high school students from across the country will have the chance to showcase their academic accomplishments and compete for three full-tuition scholarships, each one valued at $26,150—an entire year of school at MNU. The top ten runners up will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship, and all remaining participants will be given $1,000 in scholarship money, on top of their existing academic awards.

In order to be competitive, MNU prefers that all participants have a cumulative GPA of 3.75
(27 ACT/1200 SAT), a strong record of academic achievement, and be on track to graduate in 2016. The registration process starts online, and not all materials are required to begin. Progress made on the application website can be saved and continued on a later date. In order to complete the process, and become eligible to compete, students must submit 2 letters of recommendation from a teacher or counselor, a resume, and a professional portfolio. The portfolio is required to be submitted digitally in the form of a PDF, and must showcase in detail the students’ level of involvement in extracurricular activities, completed school projects, or involvement in student government, music programs, talent shows, or other school related activities. Students are also encouraged to submit videos, photos, proof of academic awards or honors, or any other materials that demonstrate why they should be considered as a top contender for a full tuition scholarship.

Scholarships awarded during the event are renewable every year until graduation, but recipients must maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA, participate in and satisfy the requirements of the MNU Honors Program, and work at least eight hours per week in their school of study in order to remain eligible. All Scholarship Challenge weekend winners remain eligible for state and federal aid programs, even the top three students who receive the full tuition package.

The event is scheduled to begin Friday, January 22, at 9:00 am. Participants will have the chance to meet students, faculty, and staff, as well take a campus tour and learn about research currently being conducted at the MNU. For Friday evening, event organizers have planned a special social gathering that will allow students and their families to get to know members of the Pioneer community. The scholarship interviews are scheduled to begin at 8 in the morning on Saturday, and conclude at noon. Winners will be announced within 12 business days.

To register for the event, or to learn more about program requirements, please visit the official Scholarship Challenge webpage.
