Largest Freshman Class Since 2010

Sep. 13, 2017 - by Carol Best

MNU’s new freshman class, numbering 223, is the largest since 2010 (229).  This represents a 26.7 % increase over 2016 and is the second largest class since 2006. Transfer students are also up with 90 new students calling MNU home. The total incoming class is 313 this year compared to 260 in 2016.

Opening Week 2017

Students gather on the campus mall at MNU during the opening week of school.

Derry Ebert, associate vice president and dean for traditional enrollment, attributes the increase to several initiatives. Among them, admissions counselors worked diligently to increase the number of students who visited the campus in order to share the MNU story and its pioneering spirit.

“We have redesigned our campus visit programs so students experience MNU and get to know who we are and the values we hold,” Ebert says.  “We didn’t just look for students, but for students who would find our community a good fit.”

Ebert also expressed that It was a whole campus effort to bring in this class, including faculty, facilities staff, coaches, resident educators, current students and the president.

“We worked together to let prospective students and their families know that their life could be forever changed and transformed, academically and spiritually at MNU,” he said.

But it takes more than those who live and work at MNU according to Ebert.

“We are appreciative of the alumni, pastors, youth pastors, and friends of MNU who recommended students who they thought would make great Pioneers,” he added.

Honors Program Director Mark Hayse remarked that he hasn’t seen a “tighter group” of Honor’s freshmen since the first year of the program for high achieving students. He attributes this closeness to a New Student Orientation (NSO) retreat that took place opening week.

“They are enthused, friendly, full of anticipation and excitement, and fun to work with every day,” he says. “They are excited about what’s coming next and I am too.”
