2017 Mission Trips

Feb. 16, 2017 - by Carol Best

Whether it’s halfway around the world in Africa or just a few hours up I-35, in Iowa, MNU students have several opportunities to serve others in ethnically, culturally and geographically diverse settings this year. Six mission trips will immerse students in situations where they “can see God work in ways they never would if they stay in their own comfort zone,” says Alison (Weinstock, '03) Johnson, MNU ServiceCorps coordinator.

During spring break, a mix of undergraduate and graduate students will travel to Cameroon to work with Bread for Life International medical teams and help evangelism teams. Dr. Acha Goris leads this group that provides Master of Arts in counseling students the chance to experience their chosen vocation in situations unlike anything they would encounter back home.

Also during spring break, a group will spend time in Iowa City working with IC Compassion and the multicultural Iowa City Church of the Nazarene. The church, which runs multiple ministries to diverse groups, has become a favorite destination for MNU students seeking the challenge of intercultural experiences.

Fifteen students will spend spring break in Haiti renovating a medical unit to handle cholera cases in Cascade Pichon (see Passion to Serve story).

Another group will accompany Dr. Jo and Rocky Lamar on the annual mission trip to Native American Christian Academy in Sun Valley, Arizona this May. Education majors and basketball players will teach NACA students and provide friendly mentorship and a basketball camp over the week in Arizona.

Finally, 12 students will travel to the “land of the long white cloud” with Johnson when they visit Whangarei, New Zealand in July. The students will minister to children and help complete renovations to New Hope Church of the Nazarene where Johnson pastored prior to her current position at MNU.

Donations for mission trips are always welcome at https://connect.mnu.edu/go-global-gift.
