MLK Living Legacy Award to Rev. Marvin Daniels

Jan. 18, 2017 - by Carol Best

Rev. Marvin Daniels, executive director of The Hope Center of Kansas City, was honored with MNU's Martin Luther King Jr. Living Legacy Award yesterday. Daniels' work on Kansas City's east side iincludes a community medical center called Hope Family Care Center and Hope Leadership Academy, a charter school. Lights of Hope was the event's theme and Daniels encouraged Christians to be dispensers of light and hope to a divisive world.

"Do not allow the culture to define love and hate," Daniels stated. "At The Hope Center we strive to help the hopeless become hopeful, the hopeful become healthy and the healthy become helpful."

Using the illustration of a child's game of tag, Daniels suggested that once tagged by Christ's love, grace and mercy, the tagged have a responsibility to spread those gifts to others.

MNU's MLK Leader Scholars were also honored at the event. The students chosen for the award receive a scholarship to recognize their commitment to leadership qualities that embody the philosophies of Dr. King.
