RE Thinking Leadership

About 130 student leaders from ten North American Nazarene colleges and universities will attend Nazarene Student Leadership Conference at MNU April 4-7, 2013. The theme for the conference is RE (pronounced like the prefix re-). Event organizers say this theme is an abstract version of the phrase "thinking outside the box" or “re-think the box.” Students will be challenged to re-examine servanthood, reignite creativity, re-evaluate success, readdress stewardship and rethink leadership.

“RE represents a lens through which Christlike leaders begin to see life,” says Josh Dampf, MNU’s coordinator for NSLC. “This is a path marked by sacrifice and selflessness. It is a challenge that pushes us outside our borders of comfort and complacency and into a life of vitality and faithfulness.”

Focusing on leadership development the group will hear from eight speakers including Dr. David Busic, president of Nazarene Theological Seminary, speaking on “Protecting the Heart of a Leader,” and Dr. Rick Power, senior pastor of Olathe College Church of the Nazarene, speaking on “Leadership Amid Diverse Cultures.” The conference keynote speaker is author Gary Morsch, M.D., founder of Heart to Heart International.

The student leaders will also enjoy an interactive team-building scavenger hunt on the Country Club Plaza, site seeing in Kansas City, and community service. In the scavenger hunt students will be competing to raise money for the charity of their choice.

“Our goal is to cultivate servant leaders who take the ordinary and routine parts of their lives, and inject them with purpose and intentionality in order to create meaningful and unique experiences for each of our diverse campuses,” Dampf said.

NSLC is an annual conference, begun in 1964. Each spring, a group of executive student officers from the North American Nazarene institutions of higher education come together for the event, which emphasizes the leadership development of student government. The schools attending are Point Loma Nazarene University, Eastern Nazarene University, Northwest Nazarene University, MNU, Olivet Nazarene University, Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, Trevecca Nazarene University, Southern Nazarene University, Nazarene Bible College, Ambrose College (Canada) and Nazarene Theological Seminary.
