The faculty, staff and students of MNU are mourning the tragic loss of alumnus Thomas (Tom) Clements, 58, a 1979 graduate of the university. Clements, executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, died March 19, 2013, when a gunman shot him as he answered the front door of his Monument, Colo., home. Read the full obituary here.

Clements spent more than 30 years in public service in Missouri and Colorado corrections and was highly regarded by officials in both states. He worked with the Special Olympics and served as an adjunct professor at Columbia College in Mo., among other professional and community organizations. He was involved with the United Way and was passionate about serving his community.

Hundreds attended the public memorial service in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 25. Clements’ widow Lisa (Smith) is a 1980 graduate of MNU.

The investigation into Clements' murder is ongoing.
