Alumna Wins Robert I. Brower Award

Dr. Ruth Waggoner, principal of Heatherstone Elementary School in Olathe, Kan., was honored at MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Professional and Graduate Studies Commencement Saturday, May 11. Waggoner received the Robert I. Brower award in recognition for excellence as an adjunct professor in the Master of Education program.

Waggoner is a 1981 alumna of MNU with an undergraduate degree in elementary education. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and a doctorate from Baker University. Waggoner has been an elementary school teacher for grades 1, 2, 4 and 5. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and a winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. In 2003 she was the Kansas Teacher of the Year.

The Robert I. Brower award is based on the nominations of students and honors an MNU educator in Professional and Graduate Studies who is a model of excellence in teaching and Christian character, and is an individual who exemplifies the mission of the University. The award is named for Bob Brower, now president of Point Loma Nazarene University. Brower was instrumental in the early development of MNU’s innovative graduate and adult studies programs.
