On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther, a German monk, published 95 theses (discussion points) about several key issues of reform within the Church. The hammering of this single document on the door of a church by Luther reverberated throughout the Europe. Resulting in major theological debates at the highest levels of Church leadership, the division of opinions over Luther’s ideas eventually led to a split within the Church, between what we know today as the Roman Catholic Church and Protestants (or Protesters). The controversies in the 1500s caused great upheaval in the realms of church authority, politics and economics. These two groups remain distinct expressions of the Christian faith today. However, over the centuries, Catholics and Protestants have found more common ground than in the days of Luther and both groups affirm the essential grounds of orthodox Christian faith.
