Minimum Computer Specifications

Minimum recommended computer specification for incoming students:
[ Computer system ]
IBM-compatible (Many of our faculty/staff have had great success with Gateway PC's.)

  • 400MHz Processor (Intel or AMD brands)
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 5 GB Hard Drive
  • Monitor size of your choice (15" - 17" NOTE: 19+" monitors may not be a good fit for dorm-room desks.)
  • CD-ROM Drive (any speed)
  • 3COM 10/100 Twisted Pair Ethernet Card
  • Multimedia (Sound Card/Speakers)
  • Keyboard/Mouse
  • IOMEGA Zip 100MB Drive (for document backup purposes)
  • Printer: Although the library lab offers an HP LaserJet, you might want your own in your room. For this we recommend a quality ink jet, such as an HP DeskJet 800 or 900 series)
  • Simple surge protector highly recommended (approx. $20 from discount stores)
NOTE: it is recommended that you purchase the fastest processor affordable. This will lengthen the expected useful lifetime of the computer. For example, an 800 MHz processor would be expected to be useful for four years.)

Recommended Application Software (one of the following):
(Use your MNU student ID to gain educational pricing School World, Supreme Software, Software Express or other software store offering educational discounts.)

All Internet software is freely available for download once your computer is connected to the MNU campus network

Macintosh
We strongly discourage the use of Macintosh computers for educational purposes at MNU, but the minimum requirements for a Macintosh to use the campus network is as follows:

  • 68030 16MHz Processor
  • 8 MB RAM
  • 250 MB Hard Drive (with at least 100 MB free)
  • Asante (or built-in) Ethernet Card with 10Base-T connector
  • MAC OS 7.6 (8.0 strongly recommended)

Your computer is your personal property. While we are grateful that we can offer connectivity to the Internet, the IT office can not provide technical support on issues other than that connectivity. We recommend repair consultation with area repair stores or student-peers.
