The library provides access to course reserves, which are defined as materials placed in the library by an instructor for additional reading. These materials are kept behind the Circulation/Reference Desk, and will be retrieved by staff upon request.
Instructors can place print materials and media on course reserve for use by students. Instructors and students may use these materials throughout the semester.
Copyright and Fair Use
Instructors are responsible for determining if their use of copyrighted material falls within fair use, or if they need to obtain permission to use the material. Visit the Fair Use and Course Reserves webpage for information on how to make this determination. The library does not place required textbooks on reserve. One of the principles of Fair Use is market value, and placing a required textbook on reserve affects the financial remuneration of the copyright holder.
Copyright Permission Requests
Faculty are responsible for seeking copyright permission when appropriate. One option is to write to the copyright holder. This can be done using either e-mail or "snail-mail." It involves slightly more work but is typically less expensive. A sample permission request letter is available. An alternative is the Copyright Clearance Center, which is convenient, but can be more expensive. Mabee Library does not have funds available to assist with the paying of copyright permission fees.
Information about the process and timeframe for placing items on course reserve are found on the Course Reserves Policy webpage.
