Recreational and Leisure Studies prepares you to build health and wellness programs; direct recreational, sport, and outdoor leadership events; and provide opportunities for all people to access and conserve local parks.

The Facts

With the growing popularity of the parks and recreation services, both local and national, recreation and leisure studies graduates are in high demand! You will learn to develop, evaluate, and direct wellness, recreational, intramural, and outdoor leadership programs. You will also develop skills including financial organization, facilities management, and turf and grounds maintenance.

You will learn to set goals, measure program outcomes, and evaluate program success in order to serve diverse populations and provide needed services for the organization and community.

Jobs in the recreation field are increasing nationally—in less than 10 years, employment opportunities are expected to grow by 19%! We will prepare you to meet this demand.

As a student, you will have the opportunity for hands-on experience through practica labs, and a required professional internship. There are over 80 parks and recreation programs that service the Kansas City metro area that can provide field-based experiences for our students. We will prepare you to work in a variety of sectors within the field of parks and recreation.
