Admissions Requirements

You are eligible for our program ONLY if you:

  • have a BS or BA degree in another field from a regionally accredited college or university, OR
  • are HIGHLY motivated with at least 60 hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Have completed all program prerequisites as outlined below with a program prerequisite GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale, AND
  • have a cumulative undergraduate GPA* of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 grading scale.
  • demonstrate proficiency with the English language
  • have NOT failed a nursing course at another program
  • have a verified application; See Application Process.

ABSN Program prerequisites

In addition to the basic program requirements listed above, we have specific course prerequisites. These prerequisites may vary slightly depending on if you have earned an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

  • Lifespan Development (includes Lifespan, Human/Child Development)** – 3 hours
  • College Algebra (or proficiency)** – 3 hours
  • Probability & Statistics** – 3 hours
  • English Comp I (or proficiency)** – 3 hours
  • Public Speaking (Communications course)** – 3 hours
  • Anatomy with a lab**† – 4 hours
  • Physiology**† – 3 hours
  • Human Nutrition** – 3 hours
  • Additional Life Sciences – 5-7 hours total
    Additional Life Science course examples include but are not limited to Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, and Chemistry.

*Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees do not qualify for this category. Please refer to the prerequisite section for applicants without AA or BA degree.

**Required. t A 5 or 6 hour combined Anatomy/Physiology course will meet the above requirement, but may result in the student needing an additional Life Science credit. Please speak to our admissions department for more information.

    Social Responsibility courses include, but are not limited to: Sociology Courses: General Sociology, Cultural & Social Anthropology, Understanding Multicultural Behavior, Intercultural Communications, Marriage & Family; Psychology Courses: General Psychology, Criminal Justice Courses: Introduction to Criminal Justice; Economics: Macro or Micro Economics, Personal Finance. Please speak with our admissions staff if you have questions on which courses qualify.
  • Fine Arts Elective – 3 hours
    Fine Arts courses typically include but are not limited to courses in Foreign Language, Art, Music, and/or Theater.

*Cumulative GPA is based on the applicant’s entire academic record. If it is beneficial to the applicant meeting admission requirements, the cumulative GPA will be calculated using transcripts from the last three years of college attendance.

PLEASE NOTE: if you have taken the ACT exam, higher scores may exempt you from some required courses. Additionally, many students can demonstrate proficiency by passing a CLEP exam. Our admissions staff will work with you to carefully go over your academic records in order to ensure you fully meet our requirements. We will work with you as best we can to ensure your start in our program is a success.

For those unable to meet the demands of this intensive one-year program, our two-year traditional BSN program might be a better fit. Let us know if you’d like more information about how you could transfer into that program as well. 

Exam options at MNU

Program requirements for English proficiency:

All applicants to the MNU nursing program whose native language is not English must demonstrate an established level of English language proficiency through the TOEFL iBT exam. When submitting test scores to MNU, please submit only original scores. MNU’s TOEFL code is 6437. Photocopies will not be accepted.

The Kansas State Board of Nursing and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing have recommended minimum standards for English Language Learners (ELL). For ELL students applying to the nursing major at MNU, TOEFL (iBT) or IELTS scores are required as follows:

Minimum scores required on the TOEFL-iBT and IELTS exams to satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirement for admission.

  • TOEFL-iBT: 21 minimum on the Reading, Listening, Writing subscores; 26 minimum on the Speaking subscore
  • IELTS: 7 minimum on all subscores, with the exception of Speaking; 8 minimum on the Speaking subscore

When submitting test scores to MNU, please submit only original scores sent directly from the testing agency. Photocopies will not be accepted. For testing purposes, MNU’s school code number for the TOEFL-iBT is 6437.

Waiving the TOEFL Requirements

For applications whose native language is not English, the ABSN Program Director, on a case-by-case basis may waive the TOEFL requirement, per the following:

  1. applicants who have earned a Bachelor’s or higher degree from an English-speaking accredited institution in the U.S., Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or the English-speaking provinces of Canada; or
  2. applicants who have earned a Bachelor’s or higher degree from a foreign institution where the language of instruction was English or an English-speaking Caribbean country, with instruction conducted in English.



Minimum Technology Requirements

To participate successfully in courses in the various MNU programs, (and particularly for all online courses and programs) all students must have individual access to a personal computer of one of the following types. It is recommended that your system be no more than three years old.:

    • Microsoft Windows (PC):
      Windows personal computer (desktop OK, laptop recommended), with the Windows 7 or newer Windows operating system, or a Windows 8.x or Windows 10 tablet computer (e.g., Microsoft Surface) or newer.
      NOTE: Windows Smartphones are NOT sufficient technologies by themselves. 
    • Apple:
      Mac (desktop OK, laptop recommended), with the Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) or newer Mac operating system
      NOTE: Apple tablets (e.g., iPads) and Apple smartphones (e.g., iPhones) may be handy to have for some courses and activities, but they are NOT sufficient technology by themselves. 
    • Others:
      No other devices are supported or recommended for MNU online courses and programs
      Android devices (tablets and smartphones) WILL NOT work for some critical functions.
      Chromebooks and other Netbook computers MAY NOT work for some features and functions, and therefore are not recommended. 
    • Recommended Extras:
      Webcam, for creating presentations for assignments Multimedia headset (microphone and headphones) for creating presentations for assignments and for participating in online real-time conferences.
