course reserves
The library provides access to course reserves, which are defined as materials placed in the library by an instructor for additional reading. These materials are kept behind the Circulation/Reference Desk, and will be retrieved by staff upon request.
Services
Instructors can place print materials and media on course reserve for use by students. Instructors and students may use these materials throughout the semester. Students are prohibited from making any copies of course reserve materials.
Copyright and Fair Use
Instructors are responsible for determining if their use of copyrighted material falls within fair use, or if they need to obtain permission to use the material.
Copyright Permission Requests
Faculty are responsible for seeking copyright permission when appropriate. One option is to write to the copyright holder. This can be done using either e-mail or “snail-mail.” It involves slightly more work but is typically less expensive. A sample permission request letter is available. An alternative is the Copyright Clearance Center, which is convenient, but can be more expensive. Mabee Library does not provide assistance related to the paying of copyright permission fees.
Responsibility for Copyright Compliance
By submitting a reserve request, the instructor accepts responsibility for copyright compliance. Mabee Library may refuse materials for reserve, or remove materials already on reserve, for legal or administrative concerns.
Personal Materials
Instructors sometimes lend the library personal materials for placement on course reserve. While this practice is encouraged, please note that personal books, videos or photocopied materials may be damaged by heavy use. Library users may fail to return them. Mabee Library cannot replace missing items or repair damaged personal materials.
Reserve Requests
Requests are processed in the order they are received so that all instructors and students are treated equally. Requests may take up to five working days to process per course. Materials not owned by the Library may take two to four weeks to acquire. Items requested to be placed on reserve after the beginning of the semester will generally be processed in three to five working days.
Reserve Period
The Library keeps items on reserve for a semester. At the end of each semester, all course reserve items are returned to the Library collections or to the faculty member.
Course Reserve Loans to Instructors
Any instructor needing to show a course reserve video for classroom use can check it out for up to 24 hours, if not in conflict with an existing reservation for classroom use.
Course Reserve Loans to Students
The check-out period for course reserve materials is limited to two hours. Also, the reserves are limited to in-library use only.
