2016 Passion to Serve Project Underway
| by MNU News email@example.com
The annual student-led Passion to Serve project for 2016-2017 at MNU has been announced. Continuing MNU’s long-term partnership with Heart to Heart International and the communities of Southeast Haiti, MNU is once again adopting the “LQVE Haiti” fundraising and service project. This year’s project has three objectives.
- Continue support of The Cascade Pichon Community School, constructed in 2015, by assisting with teacher stipends and leadership training.
- Fund stipends for local Haitian nurses working at seven Heart to Heart International health clinics in some of the most remote areas of the country.
- Assist with the launch of an educational program for new entrepreneurs. Mutual Solidarity (MUSO) is a program created by Haitians, for Haitians, and includes training on micro-finances, credit management and accounting, by which local residents can create and pursue their own goals for improving their community.
Student fundraising efforts include selling t-shirts, and collecting donations through a variety of events. Additionally, $2 Tuesdays (when those in attendance are encouraged to donate $2 each week) will continue this year at community chapel services. To date, more than $5,000 has been raised toward the $35,000 goal.
Other efforts to assist the people of Haiti include a Care Kit Packing event Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in Land Gym on MNU’s Olathe campus. The public is invited to assist students in putting together 1,500 care kits which will be shipped to Haiti. Donations of new, travel-sized toothpaste, bar soap, shampoo, washcloths, Band-Aids and Ziploc bags are needed by Oct. 7, 2016. Donations may be dropped off at the Student Development Office in the Campus Center building between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A mission trip to Cascade Pichon, Haiti is planned for March 13-20, 2017 and spots are filling quickly. Those interested should contact Alison Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible.
