Compelling Story of Love and Grace

MNU Tuesday Event Features Lisa (Smith '80) Clements

March 6, 2014

A recent MNU Tuesday Business and Professionals Luncheon held in Denver, Colo., featured alumnus Dr. Lisa (Smith ’80) Clements, director of the Colorado Department of Human Services Office of Behavioral Health. Dr. Clements is the wife of the late Dr. Thomas (Tom) Clements (’79), executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections at the time of his tragic death at the hands of a gunman March 19, 2013.

Lisa Clements shared the story of the couple’s life: how they met at college, dated, married and pursued parallel career paths, as well as the night when he died in her arms on their front door step.

“It was quite compelling and her courage, strength in Christ throughout the ordeal, as well as her love for MNU was encouraging,” said Kevin Garber, director of alumni relations.

Clements and her two daughters have been interviewed by CNN about their experience and how they cope with the tragedy. Stories on the family have circulated from The Denver Post to The Huffington Post.

“Lisa’s presentation spoke of God's power to use a terrible situation for His glory,” said Alumnus Rev. Shawn Siegfried (’87), pastor at Denver First Church of the Nazarene, who attended the event. “It showed how a good man's senseless death could be used to spread the gospel of hope.”

Siegfried said he was moved and motivated by the event.

“These events show the impact a college like MNU has on us as alums,” he said. “Also it encourages us to spread the word about the good work the college is doing.”

The next MNU Tuesday event is April 8 and features Gerald Smith (’85) speaking on Brand Positioning in the Marketplace. Smith is the founder of Premier Studios and president/CEO of Nazarene Publishing House.
