Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has declared April 16-22 Kansas Private College Week in the state.
The 18 member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association are the beneficiaries of the governor’s proclamation, which urges “all citizens to join in this observance by recognizing the important contributions of private colleges in the state.” KICA institutions include Baker University, Benedictine College, Bethany College, Bethel College, Central Christian College, Donnelly College, Friends University, Hesston College, Kansas Wesleyan University, McPherson College, Manhattan Christian College, MidAmerica Nazarene University, Newman University, Ottawa University, Southwestern College, Sterling College, Tabor College, and University of St. Mary.
The 18 private nonprofit colleges in Kansas enroll 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year; and have over 200,000 living alums—half of whom live and work in Kansas. Among these alums are some of the state’s most important civic, business and cultural leaders including, Olathe’s Mayor Michael Copeland and Olathe’s Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Dr. Jeff DeGraffenreid, who are both MNU alumni.
Kansas private colleges are major employers in many smaller communities and enrich those communities with an array of cultural and community education events, contributing significantly to the quality of life. They routinely invest significant financial resources in the economies of their local communities and the state through annual budgets and major construction projects, and student spending.
Promoting civic engagement and leadership development of students through extensive community service and internship/work study programs, Kansas private colleges provide educational programming and campus culture that places a priority on the development of personal character and ethical practice.
