MBA Exceeds Alum's Expectations

MBA student Lucas Mellinger

MNU has far exceeded my expectations in terms of the openness and availability of the professors to the students and the faith community that they have built around the program.

Lucas Mellinger is a lifelong Church of the Nazarene member who earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois in 2011. When he moved to Kansas City and decided to pursue an MBA, it was natural that his first look was at MNU.

"I quickly realized that I needed something to differentiate myself from the normal job applicant, and I always personally loved learning," Lucas says. "I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to pursue my masters from a Christian educational institution--in an uplifting environment that would encourage my faith journey."

MNU’s competitive pricing and the intensive format was also exactly the combination Mellinger wanted. He looked at several universities in the KC Metro area but decided MNU was the best fit for his goals. Currently an accountant with Multi-Service Technology Solutions, he hopes his degree will open doors for him to someday work in a church or non-profit setting. He has found his MBA courses are already impacting his current job, though.

"It has allowed me to see the bigger organizational picture.  It has given me the knowledge and visibility to understand the greater corporate strategy outside of the accounting area which was previously my area of expertise," he says.

Mellinger came into the MBA program with several years of real-world experience in accounting, which gave him a head start in some ways, but in others, he says he has been "blown out of the water" by MNU’s program. The availability of the professors to the students and the quality of instruction and the people in the program are all highlights for him.

“It is so nice that after a long day of work to come to a learning environment where you know your faith will not be under fire,” Lucas says. “I’ve made some strong friends in my cohort group, and the knowledge gained through the program helps to supplement my real-life experiences to give my career the boost it needs as I get into the core years of my working life.”
