MidAmerica Nazarene University’s female athletes have the highest combined GPA of any women’s team in the Heart of America Conference at 3.41, earning MNU’s Becca Skillman, the HAAC Commissioner’s Scholarship Award. The award is given to a representative chosen by the winning school’s athletic department. Skillman, a sophomore, women’s soccer goalkeeper from Olathe, Kan., majoring in elementary education, was chosen.
Skillman boasts a 3.91 GPA and according to MNU Athletic Director, Kevin Steele, is “one of our best student athletes both academically and athletically.”
The award will be presented to MNU president Dr. Ed Robinson by HAAC Commissioner, Larry Lady, at a later date.
MNU athletes also won the HAAC Commissioner’s Champions of Character Award which is based on how a student athlete portraits the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character—sportsmanship, integrity, servant leadership, responsibility and respect.
MNU’s Brandon Smith, a junior defensive end for the Pioneers, and a youth & family ministry major from Minneapolis, Minn., won the men’s award. Jen Costa, senior pitcher/shortstop from Escalon, Calif., majoring in elementary education, won the women’s award.
