MNU's 13th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at MidAmerica Nazarene University will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at 9:30 a.m., at College Church of the Nazarene at 2020 E. Sheridan in Olathe. The public is invited to join MNU students, faculty, staff and community leaders at this free event.

Each year at this event MNU presents its Martin Luther King Jr. Living Legacy Award. This year’s recipient is Olathe community leader Vivian Avery, formerly of the Olathe Human Relations Commission.

In addition, MNU’s 2018-2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Leader Scholars will be recognized. MNU established this scholarship program for persons from diverse ethnicities who wish to emulate Dr. King’s passion for learning and servant leadership. MNU Leader Scholars maintain their scholarship award by demonstrating academic and leadership qualities during their university studies.

Sponsorships are available for individuals and corporations. For questions about the event please contact Pete Brumbaugh at or (913) 971-3606.

Ms. Vivian Avery is the 2019 Living Legacy Award winner. The award will be presented at the celebration. Vivian served six terms on the Olathe Human Relations Commission. She was the driving force in developing the City of Olathe’s Martin Luther King Contest. Nurturing the program for 18 years, it grew from an essay contest of 12 students to a multimedia contest of more than 4,000 Olathe School District students.

Vivian's goal is to unite people from diverse backgrounds to work toward a common goal and prove that knowledge, determination, hard work and sacrifice can make a difference.
