Indoor Track & Field Takes the Heart
The Pioneers’ Indoor Track & Field squads won both men’s and women’s Heart Championships and boast several National qualifiers.
The men dominated the Heart meet to capture the first team title since 2007. The Pioneers won seven events overall, six of them among shorter distances and the 60-meter hurdles. Devan Sawyerr won three events (60-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter), while George Robinson added individual titles in the 800-meter and 1,000-meter. Michal Riha (60-meter hurdles) and Michael Lewis (triple jump) also added event wins. At Nationals, Isaac Zitterkopf and Michael Lewis earned All-America honors.
The women's team won seven events overall to cruise to the team crown, totaling 179.5 points for its second team championship in program history and first since 2007. Raiven Ellis defended her 2016 championship in the triple jump and added the long jump crown to give the Pioneers two of six individual titles. The Pioneers also won the 4x800-meter relay to go along with individual titles for Olivia Brown (60-meter), Brianna Blackwell (600 meter), Andrea Mendez (1,000 meter) and Dacia Harris (pentathlon). At Nationals, Raiven Ellis and Dacia Harris earned All-America honors.
Men's Basketball Finishes 6th
The men’s squad went 17-14 overall and 16-10 in conference play to finish 6th in the Heart. Justin Randall earned 1st team All-Conference honors along with Honorable Mentions for Payne Andrus, Jonathan Green, and David Nelson. At the end of the regular season, Randall led the nation with 2.8 blocked shots per game, and Andrus led the conference with 6.1 assists per game.
Defending National Champion Women's Basketball to National Tournament
The Lady Pioneers suffered several season-altering injuries on route to a 4th place standing and semifinal finish in the conference tournament. Jayden Oliver (Heart Newcomer of the Year) and Tristin Wicks earned 2nd team All-Conference honors with Honorable Mentions for Tanchelle Hollinsworth and Whitney Moia. The defending National Champions received an at-large bid to the Division I National Tournament which takes place at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in Billings, Mont., March 15 – 21.
